tcp/IP connection not working

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I use comcast broadband. Now recently I have been trying to connect to my buddy via tcp/IP to play a game. Everytime we try to connect to eachother (either way) it says "couldnt not connect to user". Now we both have the correct IP address and are using the same version and all that jazz. We did a ping test through MSDOSprompt to see if it was our connection and it turns out I can ping him flawlessly, but when he tries to ping me, it times out. I am sure I gave him the right IP adress and all that, I am not a complete noob and am pretty sure I am not using anu firewalls (including the WINDOWS XP one). I am not using a router of anykind, I am going directly from the modem to my computer. How come I can get through to him, but he cant get through to me? I ping my own computer and it works. Any suggestions? ANy help would be nice!!1 THANKS!!!

What game is this that you're trying to play?

If your friend can't ping you, you're behind one or more firewalls that are blocking ICMP packets. You say that you're pretty sure you're not behind any firewalls, but we need a definite "yes" or "no". Do you have a software firewall like ZoneAlarm installed? If you have a direct connection to your cable modem and it doesn't double as a NAT router, I hope you have a software firewall installed.

The IP address that you gave your friend didn't fall in one of these ranges, did it?:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

If you can ping your own computer, that just means that your TCP/IP stack is installed correctly.

We are trying to play baldurs gate 1 #64 on IGn's greatest games of all time I believe

The IP was a legit one. There werent any zero's in it like that of the sort.

I dont know if this has any importance but my friend also ran a "tracert" in msdosprompt and he can ping me for the first 2 attempts, but after that all the tries are timed out?

I am pretty damn sure that I dont have any firewalls, I am going to double check again though. Does it sound like I have a hidden firewall(s)?

-thanks!

Umm... a "legit" IP address can have zeroes in it, but as long as it didn't fall in one of the ranges I posted, then the IP address isn't a problem. The IP address ranges that I posted are non-routable, which means that communication between two computers on a TCP/IP network can't be established with them.

If your friend ran a trace route to you and there were time-outs at hops where there should normally be a response, then there's your problem. However, if there are only two hops between you guys and the rest were time-outs, that just means that you're behind a firewall that's blocking ICMP packets, like I suggested earlier.

Yes, it does sound like you have a software firewall installed. If you're not completely sure if you have one, look at the icons in your system tray, near the clock. A software firewall, if you have one installed, should have placed an icon there. Also look through your Start > Programs list, in case you have a firewall installed but it has an option of not showing its icon in the system tray. Norton Personal Firewall/Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm, Kerio Personal Firewall, Sygate Personal Firewall and the McAfee firewall are all common software firewalls.

If you and your friend have any other games that you play online together where a direct connection is made between you two, do they work?

Alright I am going to look under add/remove program list to see if there is anything I missed.

No, there arent any other game we have been able to play via TCP/IP. The only games we could play together are counter-strike and games where u connect to a server and such.

Is it possible to have a hardware firewall that I dont know about?

-THANKS!!!!!

Yes, it's possible that you're behind a hardware firewall, specifically a cable modem that also doubles as a router. What kind of cable modem do you have?

Posted by: slickerpunk

I dont know specifically what kind of modem I have. I called the tech support and they have set up an appointment within the next few days because they dont know what the hell is going on either.

I checked, and double checked, and I definately do not have a software firewall on this machine.

Is the only other probable possibility a hardware firewall? If it is on the modem is there simply a switch I can flick to turn it off??

If you don't know what kind of modem you have, simply look at it and it should be obvious.

What tech support did you call? Your ISP's tech support?

If the XP firewall is disabled and you don't have a software firewall installed, the port is being blocked by a hardware firewall or your ISP.

Haha... if your modem doubles as a router or has the ability to block ports, no, there is no switch to flick it off. You need to access the modem/router's port forwarding or firewall settings, most likely through a Web interface.
