I'm stuck! Possible CD problem?

Thanks in advance!

I'm attempting to fix my fiance's mom's computer.

Specs

Gateway - From 99 or 2000
2 sticks of 128 PNY RAM PC100
XP Home Edition - Shipped with 98
P2 450 Mhz
40g HD
CD/CDRW Combo
PCI Geforce 2 w/ 64megs

Previously it was taken to a local computer shop and the guy installed the ram, the video card and reformatted the HD. His notes indicate that when he installed XP, he couldn't get the CD drive to work so he loaded it in another gateway and through it in the PC.

Before taking it to the PC shop, the CD drive had gone bad and that's when they installed the combo drive. I believe it's a Nero drive?

Here's the problem...when you put a CD in...you can copy files off the CD from Windows Explorer just fine. However, the autorun generates errors and always shuts down. Also if you try to run any file from the CD, it generates errors and crashes. Here is a sampling of the errors:

"Application failed to initialize properly - Click OK to terminate"
"CD Install Picker encountered a problem"
"Insufficient Memory"
"CDpicker.exe entry point not found"
"Setup caused a stack fault in module ______"

Every CD does this, including the original XP CD. They are unsure if the drive ever worked after the install. The drive comes up as IDE5224 in device manager - type DVD/CDROM drives - standard cd rom drives - location 0/(0). Device manager states that it is working properly and the drive does not come with any drivers of it's own. It should be able to work with XP.

They are trying to just get a few select programs running on the computer but copying the programs to the HD and then running the install has not worked for me. I'm able to get the files copied but I'm still unable to run the install.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I'm running out of ideas. Someone stated that it could be a RAM issue...I'm thinking that maybe it's a defective drive or there is something whack with the install. Any thoughts that I may be missing?

THANKS!!!

A device has to be recognized by the BIOS, if BIOS doesn't find a device then there is no way that Windows will. The Nero is a burning utility software, not a driver. Normally CD Roms/DVD Players and Combos come with their own driver CD. In most cases the Window driver will be OK, but not necessary. The Device and PC specs have to match. Visit the manufacturers websites, i.e the motherboard and the CD RW. The Windows Device Manager is not 100% fool proof.
It might be that your motherboard chipset drivers are not correct, i.e. when loading OS from fresh, one have to load the motherboard driver specific for the motherboard, Windows put its own drivers, but they are not necessary the correct ones. The Chipset drivers are very important when dealing wit different devices.
