Try digging a patch of that ground over and watch the blackbirds come and eat the slugs. After that dig deeper and you may find your answer, which is probably that there are a lot more than three slugs at that spot.
Otherwise it could just be the local slug night spot!

and what Old said... it could be a night spot, so I suggest you play some music and serve some nice nonalcoholic punch for the sluggos. A slug mixer!! You'll be able to see the lil girl slugs in their cute lil pink dresses and the lil boy slugs with their bowties and the theemon slug in the corner with a paintball gun and fireworks laughing until he can't sluggityslide no more!!
