what is svchost.exe and why is it using up 99% of my CPU? I ran a worm check and nothing turned up so whats the deal?

I first thought it was a trojan virus when I saw 3 to 4 svchost.eve running.

that isn't ussualy it but they can attach themselves to it though, esp of you see them eating up all your cpu resources.
