FBI adds to Wiretap Wishlist
Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo
Its starting...Big Brother!!
Posted by: IceBreaker
hmm...with the blessing of Bush & Co *big surprise http://fileforums.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif* ...
...and to the detriment of the people, as usual...
...and of course, trotted out for the zillionth-and-one time, used over & over like a rotting garment that yet never seems to wear out, the all-too famous hackneyed TERRORISM argument! http://www.wilderssecurity.com/imag...lies/cheesy.gif
But we all know how this will end don't we..

It's been posted in the rants and raves fourm, at least something similar.
This is what I wrote
What's the big surprise, the internet was developed by the USA as a military project. Many conspiracy theorists would say the internet is the biggest spy scam run by the US government. Hell the all powerful USA would sooner or later want to keep tabs, especially after 9/11

I personally don't care much, I'm not involved in any "Illegal activities" http://forum.presence-pc.com/images/perso/xam.gif

How about P2P? http://forum.presence-pc.com/images/perso/666%20.gif

Indeed, no. I got rid of my kazaa when the FBI started raiding people on a regular basis...
Posted by: SKYHN
The FBI wasnt raiding pirates on Kazaa, they were raiding the big guys. The ones that distribute millions of $$ worth. Billy in Idaho who got Call of Duty and Warcraft III on p2p isnt their target. Small Potatoes. They go to the source.
There are groups that work together to get these games. People in the groups work at game stores, own stores that sell games or even work in the game industry itself, and provide the games(sometimes they do buy it though). Then the other people in the group rip that game and distribute it. Bit Torrent is pretty much how their distributed now, but IRC is still used. They make it to other p2p like Kazaa eventually. These are the guys that the FBI goes after.

Did you read the article? In case you didn't care to, here are a couple of crucial points:
Quote:
|
Legal experts said the 85-page filing includes language that could be interpreted as forcing companies to build back doors into everything from instant messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs to Microsoft's Xbox Live game service. The introduction of new services that did not support a back door for police would be outlawed, and companies would be given 15 months to make sure that existing services comply.

Under CALEA, police must still follow legal procedures when wiretapping Internet communications. Depending on the situation, such wiretaps do not always require court approval, in part because of expanded wiretapping powers put in place by the USA Patriot Act.
|
Do you agree with every law in the US? Does it not alarm you that if the need comes to protest that you might not be able to communicate to convince others of your position? Screw civil liberties, huh?

It is my patriotic duty to allow the FBI to tap into online game voicechat. Also, Counter-Strike should be outlawed.

Well I can't say it doesn't bother me completely, but I don't see any direct thread to my daily life in the near future, so...
Once it begins to effect me I'll no doubt be a lot more interested...

It's not a matter of illegal or legal but control on how we think. Read Free Culture by Larry Lessig at lessig.org
That and policing the somewhat anarchist form of media. The one that ought to remain free, unfortunatley like all good things this shall one day come to an end.
Posted by: Bix VT
Indeed, freedom of speach they should leave alone. ...anyone else remember this happening in our past? I belive it was called the "sedition act"...
Posted by: AOTY2KB
But if they do leave speech alone, then how shall you control all the disidents?

The way things are heading it won't be long before sedition is officially branded a crime - think of it as a "Patriot Act v1.1 update patch" (changelog: 'many bugs added') http://forum.hardware.fr/images/perso/ddr5s5.gif
Posted by: Bix VT
I love how they tried to make it sound good and wholesome by calling it the "patriot act"...
But I should keep my political veiws to the Rants and Raves forum...
Posted by: IceBreaker
Hell, this whole thread belongs to the R&R forum IMO - I'm surprised it hasn't been moved there yet. On the other hand, R&R is a restricted dimension - here at least, everyone can have their say & so much the better

Of course the link is broken - it's only a smokescreen, for the patch "downloads itself" without the user's knowledge hehe..

The beauty of the act is it isn't even one. It's a huge revision of already imposed laws and legislation.
Posted by: IceBreaker
Except that this time, the law could well be applied
Posted by: AOTY2KB
The law won't a revision will be. That revision shall lead to a law they charged you on, that further forwards you to some other text. A system where you are guilty until proven innocent or have a large legal firm who shall filter all this documentation.
