My computer keeps freezing all the time?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just reformatted my hard drive last night, and it still freezes, I've tried everything and I am going insane PLEASE HELP!!!!

What type of freeze is it? Can you move the mouse or restart the computer with control-alt-delete? If it's a hard lockup where you can do nothing but press the reset button, you should look into hardware issues.
Could your computer be overheating? If it's been a while since you've cleaned your computer out, do so. You may want to try running the computer with one of the sides of the case off with a fan pointing in. If that's not the case, you may have a component that is failing. Try removing any unnecessary peripherals (leave the primary hard drive, video card, and RAM).

Edit the Vcache for greater speed!
By optimizing your Vcache settings your system delivers a better, improved system performance
Just always bear in mind that the lesser the value you put in your "disk cache" the more RAM will be available for your programs/games, and will in turn improve their performance. BUT setting the "disk cache" too low, will degrade your hard disk performance. So 'balance' is the key in achieving the best setting!
Edit the system.ini
1. First you must calculate your optimal Cache settings by using the following formulas:
If you have 32 megs of RAM or below use this number:
1024
If you have 48 to 128 megs of RAM use this formula:
Amount Of RAM x 96
i.e. If you had 64 megs of RAM you would do the following equation:
64 x 96 = 6144
If you have 129 to 256 megs of RAM or above use this formula:
Amount Of RAM x 128
i.e. If you had 256 megs of RAM you would do the following equation:
256 x 128 = 32768
If you have 256 megs of RAM or above use this number:
32768
2. Click on the 'Start' menu.
3. Click on the 'Run..' button.
4. A Small window will now appear, type in the word 'system.ini' and press the 'Enter' key!
5.The system.ini file will now open, Scroll down the heading [vcache]
6. Below the [vcache] heading add the following lines of text:
MaxFileCache=Use the number you calculated in step 1
chunksize=514
Please Note: when typing the above text, make sure you DON'T put ANY spaces in between each letter, number or symbol, i.e. If you had 64 megs of RAM you would input the following code:
MaxFileCache=6144
chunksize=514
6. Open the 'File' menu at the top of the screen and choose 'Save'
7. Open the 'File' menu again and choose 'Exit'

When your computer runs out of memory, it will start to use a part of your hard disk called the swap file, it uses this swap file to make extra RAM on your computer, the only downfall is, that this extra RAM is about 20 times slower than normal RAM!
But help is here, I can show you how you can make your swap file work a lot faster for you!
Optimizing the swap file
1.Right Click on the 'My Computer' icon and select 'Properties'.
2. A 'System Properties' window will now appear , click on the 'Performance' tab
3. Click on the 'Virtual Memory' button at the bottom of the screen!
4. A 'Virtual Memory' screen will now appear, Tick the 'let me specify my own virtual memory settings' button and type the number '150' in both the 'Minimum' and 'Maximum' boxes.
Warning: Whatever you do DON'T get tempted to tick the 'Disable virtual memory' button.
6.Click O.K., Windows will now ask you to confirm these new settings, click 'Yes'!
Please Note: If after extensive PC use, you get a message on your computer saying that windows have run out of memory or something similar, the above '150' value will need increasing, try increasing it to 300!
