Hey people. I was wondering if you installed Linux Mandrake 9.2, on a home PC, no need for being a server etc. Would it have any use? e.g Is it an OS for home use with no internet or network connections? I want a total change of OS, ive tried all version of win 95-xp but just wondering the alternatives. I have a copy of Linux Mandrake 9.2 on CD.

As of right now, Mandrake is at version 10.0. If you intend to install it, I would start by getting a copy of that version. More information is at the Mandrake page.

Depending on what your definition of "any use" is, Mandrake may or may not be for you. It would be quite a change if you are willing to relearn how things work in a GNU/Linux environment. It will almost certainly work under any conditions that Windows will, but it's up to you to determine how well.

You can install Linux with Windows to second partition, you will get a boot menu where normally the top option is for Linux. Windows will not see Linux partition, but Linux will see the Windows and you can access windows files via Linux. Problems with Linux are, some devices (display drivers, modems and audio PCIs) are not foud, normally there is an alternative driver with a device for Linux (installation is little bit trickier than in Windows). GUI in Linux looks lot like Windows but Linux also has command line option, which is more demanding, that is why Linux is the OS for the real computer nerds and pros. Linux root (administration) can mess up the PC, so any experimenting should be done on non root login, but all the device driver installation should be done in root login, well just to confuse little bit.
There are lots of very good sites (forums) offering help and books about Linux.
Try Linux called Knoppix it run straight from the CD and is not installed (if one doesn't want it to be installed) on the hard driver.

I'm pleased that you are thinking of Linux, even as trial, very good.
Just prepare youself to a different magical and mystical experience after which you will never be the same, your eyes will be opened.
