Missing Registry Key for AOL Instant Messenger

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: heyitsleann

When I create a new away message with AIM and check the box to 'save for later', the away message is not 'saved for later'. In fact, there are no away messages in my away message list at all.

I believe I have tracked down what the problem might be. According to www.aol.com/aim/faq/away.html the away messages for each screen name are stored in the Windows Registry. When I follow the steps to get to where the messages are stored:
(1. Exit AIM
2. From the Start menu, launch "regedit" from the Run dialog box.
3. Browse to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\AOL Instant Messenger (TM)\CurrentVersion\Users\YOUR SCREEN NAME\IAmGoneList)

I am able to Browse to my screen name, but I do not have a key called "IAmGoneList".

When I browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\AOL Instant Messenger (TM)\CurrentVersion\Users\YOUR SCREEN NAME, I have the following keys:
AutoUpgrade, Avatar, AWAY, Buddy, BuddyAlertSounds, Chat, DialogPos, DirEntry, IM, Location, Login, Mail, Misc, RvApps, Talk, Ticker, WindowPos, Wizard, Xfer. (Note: My actual screen name goes in the place of 'YOUR SCREEN NAME')

I think this is the problem because other screen names that DO have the "IAmGoneList" key in the Windows Registry DO NOT have a problem with saving away messages.

NOW....How do I fix this? Can I just add a "IAmGoneKey" manually?

Thanks in advance for reading all this and helping me!
Leann

you can just add it manually. or simply reinstall aim, and it should be created.
