Best DivX compressor

I have begun ripping my DVDs onto my hard drive in DivX format and I was wondering if you guys had any prefences to the compressors you use, I have been using indeo 5.11 and that has been doing an OK job. Also, I haven't previewed anything yet but I want something that's real high quality and about 1 GB for every hour DVD play can you give me an idea what settings I should use to get those results.

You're using divx 5.11, right? I really doubt you'd convert a dvd into indeo video.

I prefer xvid to encode with. Not only is it great quality for it's size, but it's free too.

1 gb for one hour is real easy for both xvid and divx. As for the settings, I'd go for 5.1 ac3 audio (when available) which is about 448 kbps. 1 hour of that is about 197 mb, which leaves about 500 for the video (assuming you want 700 mb parts instead of the 1 gb you mentioned, so you can burn them on a regular cd). This would leave you with 1137 kbps for the video. For frame size, use 640xsomething, maintaining the aspect ratio. If you can choose how to resize, use bicubic to lose as little quality as possible.

If your movie doesn't look as good as you expected it (should be pretty close to dvd quality), try switching to bilineair resizing, or lower the frame size a bit.

So in short, for 1 hour parts that are 700 mb:
audio: 448 kbps 5.1 ac3
video: 1137 kbps
preferably 640xXXX resolution

thanks for the help outlaw, I have a problem, I got the Dr. DivX trial version and that won't let me take files right off of the DVD drive, it gives me an error saying that file "does not seem to be a valid video file" after trying to open it. So I thought I would just rip the DVD onto my hard drive but it seems that the only way I can do that is with an image file. The end result I want get is my DVD's off of the disks and onto my hard drive where they won't get scratched Could you give me a link to a freeware program that'll let me do this and use the settings you just described. Thanx in advance.

Check out www.doom9.net. They have pretty good dvd ripping guides. That's where I learned most of it from.
