Well i was watching a Discovery Channel special on globalisation and outsourcing to countries like India. Most of the jobs outsourced were Tech jobs. Immediately my mind went "OTS!" long story short, is the outsourcing palaver really affecting the tech industry as much as it is made out to be? I thought you all should knwo since the majority of ppl here on OTS are in the tech field. Other feilds too are welcome.
Oh and in case anyone was wondering why the hell i should be interested in this, its becasuse i am an economics major and well i take my stuff seriously.

When Morgan Stanley's IT division from NY came to give a presentation about a month ago, they talked for a bit about outsourcing. From what they said, they mostly outsource stuff that most people here wouldn't want to do anyway - the grungy stuff. It may not require any less thinking, but the tasks are generally less pleasant, and the way they put it is that they can hire people here to focus on more important and interesting problems.
Keeping in mind that that could all very well just be bullshitting propaganda, while outsourcing does make an impact on the availability of jobs (as people here cannot apply for these "low-level jobs" when they can't do any better) here... it probably doesn't make as big a difference as many people think. It's just a good place to put blame on for the general state of our economy and the unemployment rate.
Though I won't say any of this with certainty, since I have yet to give the job market a real shot - and I'm probably going to be on the lucky side when I do come out to look for a job. But that goes for most of OTS as well - the young'uns are not out of school yet, and the older folks already have jobs, or are even retired...

I heard that Dell eliminated their India based tech support, too many complaints about not understanding the operaters. I asked a technician about this the other day when I called about my psu issue and he said that they still have some tech over there. However, I used to ALWAYS get Indian tech support operators but I haven't gotten a single one since christmas and I've had about 15 service requests in all so this is pretty accurate. I guess what all this is leading to is that overseas support is limited due to complaints about lingual problems. Personally I really liked the Indians, kinda fun to talk to anf VERRYY helpful.

In any case what i actually meant was this...Is this recent trend in Globalization affecting the tech industry in America Job-wise?

Yay for globalization!
Only problem is North America needs a new market niche, no longer the manufacturing sector as that is covered by China. We need to specialize somewhere in the service industry.
