Thoughts. (At least I think they are...)

(Something you can ponder, stew, reflect, ignore, become indignant, or wonder about while I take my morning meds...)

Well, I'm following in the footsteps of Kerry by suspending my Political
Palather and amateur Campaign, until Ronald Regan is buried up proper. One should, no matter what one's political leanings respect the institutions that we all fight over with varying results. Certainly the Presidency is one of them. This week Ronald Regan lies in State in Washington.

I remember Ronald Regan becoming president and thinking then that We Americans had reached an all time low on the Electoral process when we elect an actor to be President. I mean, come on, the sidekick of Bozo the Chimp? How cynical are the powers to be to rub it in our faces? The anarchist in me felt for sure that this time, the muddled masses would rise up in revolution. I was also disappointed in California that year but considering who is now governor I suspect that the actors union lobby is stronger than I thought.

As I think back on his accomplishments, I admit I can't really think of much. Three things come to mind -- his kicking around the air traffic controllers, The moving "tear down this wall" speech and the Arms for Drugs deal with the Contras. And yet he was a very VERY popular President. Hell, I liked him and used to hum the theme from Death Valley Days every time he did a State of the Union Speech.

Certainly the current President, Bush, is glad for the distraction in Washington. He is being battered and hung out to dry by even members of his own party for making the Republicans the party of the big spenders. Having to beg the U.N. to take over the mess in Iraq must have personally cost him a lot. (Remember that the guy who is really running this current fiasco is not Bush but Cheney and His Halburton cronys). I found it interesting that both Bush and Cheney have claimed the right to retain counsel for any subsequent appearances before congressional commities. If he wins re-election, it will be the first time a sitting president with approval numbers under 50% does so.

I can't say I like Kerry as President all that much either. Again, its one very wealthy family running against another very wealthy family. I have yet to be convinced, other than through some convoluted Noblesse Nobliege, that the middle and poor classes gain by the wealthy running the country. There should be a reality check on what is really Democracy in this country.

On a local note, over the two weeks, I have been very busy playing music -- bluegrass and old timey. I like to play on the river, and the river has been very high, almost floodlike, for days now. Rivers tend to flood in the Spring...must be all that rain. One of the place we play frequently is one of those idyllic spots that you can't get enough of...
Cooper's Landing in Easley, Missouri.

Cooper's has the best site on the Missouri River in many peoples eyes, a little over an acre of privately own property just down from a River Bend where you can play on his front porch for folks and watch the river roll at the same time. If that is not enough, he has the Katy Trail running behind his building.

The Katy Trail was a triump for many outdoorsy folks in Missouri, it is essentially the old MKT rail system that was taken over by the state and converted to a walking trail. You can walk or bike from St. Charles all the way to Sedalia, MO. And lots of people do for their vacations these days...considering the price of gas.

Anyways last week brought through the Lewis and Clark Discovery Corps folks. A group of over 400 reinactors of the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore this land. These people know how to party! We played for them in three different towns -- Easley, Lupus, and Rocheport and loved every minute of it. I have to remind myself I am still a working musician these days but it gets tough to consider it anything more than a hobby. I started off last Wednesday with 230 dollars and had three left by the time we sent those Lewis and Clark folks off to Booneville Town. Needless to say we are all happy but whooped from playing so long. I look forward to a little rest.

Did I tell you that they had recalled my pacemaker? probably not. But yeah, I was surfing the internet, doing what I do best --reading stuff on sites that has absolutely no redeeming social value and came across a recall notice from Medtronic my pacemaker and defib manufacturer. Sure enough when I checked the make and model, mine was in the list.
bottom line is now I go into the hospital on the 21st of June for a few days while they install a brand new, guarenteed to work this time, device. My doctor is all excited about it -- it's a three wire model instead of two and has some features no one around here has seen yet. I am glad my doctor is happy. Happy doctors tend to pay attention to stitches and stuff, the things I worry about. Four or five days of hospital food will have me in a foul mood however and by the time I return I will be back to my normal humbug self.

For this column at least, I seem to be waxing (or is it wavering?) between absurdity and reality...Another reason why I think I fit in so well here in OTS. People here tend to really get upset over the most absurd things. I can usually follow the arguments but most of the time I use the dictionary to the left of your screen to find some word that would express their thoughts better. I seem to misunderstand or understand too well, the intent of a lot of folks these days. I must be distracted by some trivial thought like the current or impending armageddon, global war, Famine, ecological distaster or ... (insert useless worry here). At least I think I am.

I don't know about you, but anything that had direct or indirect control over my heart that had been recalled without notice would trouble me....
