Starting Warcraft

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dude505

Whenever I click the Warcraft battle.net button an error invalid servor message cmes up, but I can still go on the internet an log on to aim. Does anyone know my problem?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Are you able to connect to any of the gateways? When was the last time you could connect to any of them?

There are a few causes of this problem, and we need to narrow down the scope of the problem first.

Posted by: dude505

i cant conect to any gateways and this is a new comp so never

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

If you own another Blizzard game that can connect to Battle.net, go here, follow the steps and see if you can connect with Telnet:

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0631p

Logging in with a Warcraft III account won't work, you need to use a Diablo/Warcraft II: BNE/Starcraft/Diablo II account.

If you're on a home network and another computer on it can connect and/or you can connect with Telnet, your connection isn't the problem.

Have you downloaded the latest patch for the game yet?

Usually the real cause of this problem is a software firewall preventing Warcraft III from connecting. If you have a firewall installed, try disabling it and then connecting.

Note: sometimes clicking a "disable" option isn't enough, you may need to kill any running processes associated with the firewall.

Posted by: dude505

I have dled the latest patch but i dunt know if i have a firewall or not

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

If you own another game that can connect to Battle.net, were you able to connect with Telnet? If you're on a home network, can the other computers on it connect to Battle.net?

If you don't know if you have a firewall or not, there's an easy way to ensure that it isn't running when you try to connect. Follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Process System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes. You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.
On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

After you've done the steps and restarted your computer, try connecting again.

I loaded warcraft and that didnt work 4 b.net and i did all those things u said but it still wont work.

Do u think there is a problem because I have a wireless router?

Also in the add/remove program thing in the control panel there is a small red circle with a slash through it right next to the warcraft 3 icon.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

You still haven't answered my question... were you able to connect with Telnet and/or can another computer connected to the router connect?

No, your wireless router isn't the problem, as the router only blocks inbound traffic, not outbound.

I don't know why that red circle with the slash is there, but a corrupt game installation can cause this problem. In your Warcraft III directory, you will see the following files:

bnupdate.log
War3Inst.log
War3xInst.log (Frozen Throne only)

Open them and post their contents, please.

Posted by: dude505

Is this what u want
bnupdate.log - Blizzard BNUpdate v2.84 compiled on May 3 2004
Log created at 9:24 pm on 06/10/2004

This patch upgrades Warcraft III Reign of Chaos to version 1.15a.

RESULT: Patch successful

War3Inst.log - Log created 06-10-2004 at 9:21pm.

Installation Successful.

Yesterday i could get into telnet where they asked me to log in, but 2 day I cant do that

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Yes, that's what I was looking for. For now, let's assume that your game installation is corrupt, because I don't think it is.

So you're saying that yesterday you could connect to Battle.net with Telnet, but now you try to do it and it doesn't work? If you get an error message, what does it say (exact contents)?

Posted by: dude505

o and my non-game comp works 4 telenet 2day

Posted by: dude505

i dont get an error message it just falshes on and off

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

If your other computer can connect with Telnet, then this isn't an actual connection issue.

If Telnet closes when you try to make a connection on your computer, that explains why you can't connect with Warcraft III - the connection is failing.

The first thing I'd like you to do is go here, follow the steps and post the results of your DNS lookup:

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0631p3

Next, I'd like you to follow these steps and make sure that there are no Battle.net entries in your hosts file:
Quote:

Checking the Hosts file:
Click on Start then Search or Find files and folders to search your hard drive for a specific file.
In the file name field, type the word "hosts" (without the quotes) and search for that file.
Once Windows has found this file, you may want to make a backup copy and name it hosts.bak.
Double-click the hosts file (not the backup) and choose to open it using Notepad.
The term ".battle.net" should not appear anywhere in this document.
If you see any ".battle.net" entries, please delete them.
Close the Notepad document and choose Yes when it asks you if you want to save the file.
Now start the game and connect to Battle.net.

Finally, I'd like you to click Start, click Run, type cmd in the box and click OK. When the black box comes up, type this and hit Enter:

tasklist > C:\tasks.txt

Go to C: with Windows Explorer, open the tasks.txt file and post its contents.

Posted by: dude505

nslookup - Server: home6.bellatlantic.net
Address: 151.201.0.39

Name: useast.battle.net
Addresses: 63.240.202.120, 63.240.202.121, 63.240.202.122, 63.240.202.126
63.240.202.127, 63.240.202.128, 63.240.202.129, 63.240.202.130, 63.240.202.131
63.240.202.134, 63.240.202.138, 63.240.202.139

tasks is blank

Posted by: dude505

telnet works 2 day

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Quote:

tasks is blank

Umm... you said that your computer is new, so I assumed that it has Windows 2000 or XP on it. If it does, try tasklist > C:\tasks.txt again.

Your DNS lookup looks fine...

Did you make sure that the hosts file had no Battle.net entries in it?

Telnet works on your computer or the other computer?

Posted by: dude505

I do have windows XP but im still gettin nothin, telenet is workin on both comps 2 day, and there are no battle.net entries

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I'm not sure why Telnet was working on your computer one day and not the next, but if it's working, there are three possible causes of you not being able to connect with Warcraft III:

a. a software firewall is preventing it from connecting
b. you're trying to connect with a CD-key that doesn't work on Battle.net
c. your game installation is corrupt; for example, trying to connect with a no-CD crack may not work

The reason I'm having you make the tasks.txt file is so that I can double-check that you don't have a software firewall running. If it isn't working, there's an easier way to do this - first, go here and download HijackThis:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

Download it, run it, click the "Scan" button, and then when that button's label changes to "Save log", click that, then open the log up and post its contents.

Okay... you have Norton Internet Security installed, and you also have the Norton Internet Security firewall running. I know that because you have this process running in the background:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe

If you had done the selective startup thing correctly, that process shouldn't have been running and you should have been able to connect.

In your system tray (near the clock on your taskbar), look for a little globe that when you put your cursor over it, it says "Norton Internet Security". Right-click on it, click Disable and then try connecting with Warcraft III again.
