i upgraded to 1.5 somthing firmware and i want to use port forwarding for warcraft. Do i have to have a static ip setup with upnp to use port forwarding>?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

No, you don't have to set a static IP, and using UPnP is your choice.

Add a service for Warcraft III, and then add a rule for it.

if i dont put static ip then that means i get everything automatically right? like getting dns server and all that right?

Posted by: andruyu

and how do i make the router stable and have low ping at the same time? i get lag spikes very often. i tried changing Mtu value to the lowest 576 or somtin like that and it still spikes.

Yes.

Uhh, I haven't had lag spikes with either of my parents' FR114Ps. I don't think we're using the 1.5 firmware, though. We updated to the one that was available around August 2003 (can't remember the version), and we didn't have to play with any settings.

Posted by: andruyu

really, thats weird is there a possibility that it could deal with my modem then?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

If you think that these lag spikes have something to do with your modem, to test that you would plug your computer directly into the modem, play a game online and then see if you still have the same problem.

I'm sure the problem lies with the router itself or that firmware, though.

oh ic, directly it works fine, the latest firmware can dmg the router?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I don't think the router is "damaged", I think that perhaps the 1.5 firmware is buggy. I'm not really inclined to download and apply that firmware, though, to see what happens. I'll find out what version we're using and tell you tomorrow.

k thx, sorry for all the questions, but do you know about dropping ip packets? ses normally it shuldnt be checked but it is on mine after putting to default settings/

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Uhh... where is this setting you're talking about and what is its exact name?

Posted by: andruyu

its in the rules section and its called "drop fragmented ip packets"

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I don't have that in my Rules settings, so I'm guessing that the 1.5 firmware added it. If the description pane says that it shouldn't normally be checked, go ahead, uncheck it and see if you have any problems.

last post for now... *yawn*

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/foru...ies.cfm?t=86150

in there it states somthing about cordless phones able to cause problems like disconnect and i have a cordless phone i think that might be the case here as i am still getting discconnects on almost every router wih default settings, do you know anyhting about cordless phones and disconnects?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Hi... both of my parents are using firmware revision 1.4 Release 26.

That link you posted talks about filters for a DSL connection; if you're on DSL and you don't have any problems when you're directly connected to your DSL modem, your filters are not the problem.

Like I said, this is a problem with the router itself or the firmware.

Posted by: andruyu

aight, so wat would i do to find out wat setting is making it disconnect and get laggy??

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I looked at the release notes for the 1.5 firmware, and I didn't find anything that could be a problem. However, maybe you should take a look at them to find anything that I might have missed:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/support....asp?dnldID=721

I know that with the 1.4 release 26 firmware, I don't have any problems with all of the default settings.

thx lots smith. U helped very much and it was nice meeting ya. I fixed my problem finaly by jus callin their tech support and they told me to change the MTU value to 1360 and add in the Dns primary 4.2.2.2 and secondary 4.2.2.3, so far it helped my disconnects and made it spike instead and its not even bad jus for a couple secs so when i play games i dont drop from the game =P.

Thanks for posting back about the router problem... if I update my FR114P's firmware and I have problems, I'll see if what you did does the trick.
