The program just terminates abruptly when you try to connect to Battle.net?

yep

Have you tried reinstalling and re-patching the game? That should clear the problem right up.

If you've ever downloaded any hacks, mods, etc. for the game, they may have caused this problem, as I have seen it with Starcraft.

no hacks no mods and reinstalled and repatched several times

When you uninstalled the game, did you back up your characters and then make sure to delete the Diablo directory from your hard drive?

If the game is still installed, look for a file named bnetlog.txt in the Diablo directory. If the file contains something, it may give us a clue as to what's going on.

Your bnetlog.txt file looks fine, but your bnupdate.log file doesn't. Although the log says that the patch was applied successfully, I don't think your game installation is completely intact.

If you patched the game with an antivirus program running in the background, that may be why you got those errors in bnupdate.log. You might want to try disabling your antvirius program, reinstalling the game and re-patching it. If you do that, I'd suggest that you apply the stand-alone version of the patch:

Also, if you're on a Windows 2000 or XP limited user account, try patching under an account that has administrator rights.
