Flashing Screen in game D2X:LOD - PLEASE HELP!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: scorpio7

hey,

For some reason when i join / create games in diablo 2 LOD my monitor ((only the game)) starts flashing like a strobe light ((normal screen-black screen-normal screen-black screen etc.)) when the char is first displayed. The only way to fix this is by restarting Diablo2 (and it starts again after i join another game)

myspecs:
-pentium 4
-Windows XP
-Geforce 4 MX440 (ive tried updating)
-128 RAM (i think this is the problem)
-i have plenty of diskspace left over
-i did do a virus check
-i did check the refresh rate (ive tried both 60hz and 70hz)

the weird thing is... it just started doing this like 2 days ago, i never had this problem... i know its not a hardware problem becuz i havent added any new hardware nor did i install any new hardware

Any help is greatly appreciated! thx in advance!

this problem is gonna kill me - -; literally ... its gonna give me a seizure - -;

Running Windows XP and Diablo together with only 128 MB of RAM isn't desirable, but it shouldn't cause a problem like this. This is definitely a display issue in software, and the first thing I'd like you to try is running the game in a window with the -w flag. Humor me and see what that does.

If windowed mode worked, that obviously means you're having an issue with full-screen mode. To solve this problem, all you should have to do is do a clean install of the latest drivers for your video card and a clean install of the latest version of DirectX.

LoD supports running the game in both 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions. The chat screen is always run in 800x600, and if you're running the game itself in 640x480, that probably explains why you're having an issue only when you try to make/join a game - the game is having trouble switching resolutions and refresh rates.

There's a way to change from 640x480 to 800x600 without being in the game itself. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the box and click OK. Go to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Blizzard Entertainment > Diablo II

Select the Diablo II key and look for a value named "Resolution". If the value's data is a 0, double-click on it, change it to a 1 and click OK. Now try running the game in full-screen mode and joining/making a game.

but i do play the game in 800x600 (by going to video options and changing it there)

and the value is at 1

===edited===

i tried it out, didnt work >__< geez this is frustrating - -;

Okay... uninstall whatever video card drivers you have installed now, then go here and download the latest Forceware drivers for Windows XP:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.72

Close *all* non-essential running background programs before you install the drivers.

Next, go here and download the DirectX installer:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

Even if you have DirectX 9.0b installed already, please reinstall it.

A clean install of your video card drivers and DirectX should solve the problem.

i dont mean to sound like a bich or anything but thats the similar, if not the same, stuff u told me to do in your previous post

does not work - -; (i did everything u told me to again anyway)

this is SOOOO frustrating!!! - -;

Yes, I did tell you to do it in my previous post, and you gave no indication that you actually did it.

Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag in the box and click OK. Click the More Help tab, then click the button labeled "Override...". Select the Override Value radio button, put the number 60 in the box, click OK and then click Exit. Try joining/making a game again.

im just gonna play the game windowed .. i have another error.. imma make a new thread... ;P

The refresh rate thing should have done the trick...

Besides a format, I don't know what else would help, although I'm still curious about the cause of your problem. Did all this start after you downloaded or installed some software? If so, what was it?

This problem didn't just come up out of thin air, so there had to have been something you did to cause it. Most likely it was a change you made in software, like a setting change or installing a new program.
