Religion in Politics???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Good Lord. boredom is a terrible thing indeed. Currently it is 11.45pm and i have just come back from watching my favorite stretch of TV; Larry King followed by Aaron Brown.

Of course Larry had nothing of particular interest except that Lacy Peterson palaver which, frankly, i am tired of. It was however, Paula Zahn's show that caught my attention and my good ol' buddy Aaron Brown picked up on it.

It never ceases to amaze me the antics these politicians constatnly get up to. Now they are messing around with religion and bringing it into the political sphere. Or is it the other way round? Are religious figures trying to force religion into the political sphere?

Just last week alone, the President went to see the Pope and supposedly asked him to put presure on the catholics in the US to be more, shall we say, indisposed, to issues such as abortion rights. This is a country that has a large catholic presence in it and should the pope accede to sucha request, needless to say it would not go unheeded.

Then we have the national conference of Catholic bishops and prreists, and what should be the main focus of such a gathering? Whether or not Catholic politicians who are sympathetic to issues like abortion rights and the like, are eligible to take communion and the holy sacraments.

Seems to me, despite the best efforts of some politicians to keep religious matters out of the political sphere, religion is really a very important factor in deciding the future rulers of this country.

When we say religion, maybe we should be mroe bold and jsut say it...CHRISTIANITY, there, i said it.

Politicians will pander to the whims of those they feel will get them in power. as it is, christianity has become an important, for lack of any suitable words (too tired to think of any), "stumblingblock," as the Bible itself puts it. It is a hurdle that is yet to be (and probably may nto be) over come.

I liked the cover of Time; Faith, God and the Oval office. This has put in perpective the fact that religion and politics have become intertwined in each other; Religion seeks to use politics as a means of enforcing its mandates, while politics seeks to use religion as a stepping-stone to power.

i have finished typing and realized the length of thsi post. i do apologize if anyone even bothers to read it. Sometimes issues such as these bug me and i tend to take them more seriosuly than i probably should. Frankly i find OTS a suitable sounding board for my babblings (if Messr Laggy does not object to thsi that is ).

Well, Good Night!

religion and politics? i am outraged you would put this in rants and raves?

but did you just realize that politics and religion go hand in hand? bush has said many times he is on a mission from god and that gods speaks through him. ashcroft holds "volunteery" pray sessions every morning. clinton mentioned god six times in his inagrual address. when was it not like this? is there any politician that would dare say they were an atheist or agnostic? most happily wear there religion on there sleave and pander to there "flock" any chance they get. christian means christ like. i do not know any christians though i am sure there are a couple amongst the others that jugde and point fingers at anything they deem to be immoral. calling hellfire and damnation on those they deem to be sinners. so there is my rant...

any talk related to religion always end up in "my god is better than your god" and "religion is a crutch" type discussions - add politics to that and, well, we will have more ranting than good-natured discussions ... I am sure your "outrage" will pale in comparison to the can of worms this topic will open up...

anyway, gj TR...

Maybe I'll just decide to do some ranting of my own today, or maybe it's because I'm out of chocolate.

On the local level where I live politics and the churches go hand-in-hand. Our Town Supervisor, who happens to be suing me for $1.4 million dollars because my husband and I made him impotent with a photocopier machine (another loooong story), decided to make himself known by promising political and personal favors to ministers at local churches, if they carried out his dirty work. Now mind you, this is not a major urban area, it's a small rural community with maybe 3,000 people scattered across 47 square miles of township.

Anyway, this guy went to the minister of the church we went to and promised them that the Town would overlook some things they wanted to do as far as the zoning regulations went. This pleased the minister who was new and had some pretty radical ideas, like wanting to bulldoze the 120 year old church to build himself a 1,000 seat mega-church so he'd have a bigger platform to perform on. (He's another loooong story too.) I and my husband were both on the church council board and very active in the church and out of the blue we were told at a church council meeting by the minister that us being victimized by a lawsuit was bad for HIS image and bad for the church and get the hell out. Now most normal churches would rally behind a member of it's congregation, not necessarily get involved in a lawsuit that was none of it's business but would say something like "we will pray for you" etc etc.
But nooooooooo, this dinky little church (about 20 people if that), decides to affiliate itself with a fatheaded politician who has his way and micromanages everything.

So you talk about the state of the world and how politics interfers with religion? I live with it on a daily basis, and it doesn't have to be on a national level.

religion has usually been a part of politics in this country, although it waxes and wanes, depending on who is in office. anyone remember reading about the big brouhaha over kennedy being catholic? the stink wasnt about him being deeply religious mind you, but over his specific religious affiliation only.

now, most politicians give lip service to religion, but pretty much carry on secularly, as they should. theres always a handful that dont seem to understand what the first amendment is about, and unfortunately, this round the president is in that group. a lot of this nonsense will go away once bush is out of office, whether it be next year or in 5 years.

laggy you missed the sarcasm. thought it would be obvious considering i went on to rant a little...politics and religion are the two topics sure to start something...when you add the two together there is not a greater devisive issue.
