I don't like advertisements. I found this and thought it would help some of you that need to buy books for school or study.

You can't

Posted by: Chako

High Schools start on September 4th up here. University I think, starts around the same time also.

Posted by: Swilo

I move in at Buffalo on thursday (liberation from these morons) but classes don't actually start for another week or so. My comp still doesn't work and I better get that replacement mobo tomorrow so I have time to get it going good before I leave...

Posted by: uh...ok

High school for me re-starts on the coming Friday... (Senior year!)

Which is early considering we got off during mid-June. But some other schools also start this early (like one other school), while the rest start about a week or 2 later than us.

Colleges... they have another month to go.

Posted by: Kdr Kane

I have considered going into "pre-retirement" where I just go to school for the next 20 or 30 years.

Posted by: Chako

School is the best and worst of times. The older you get though, the more you miss it. Now if only 90% of the students realized that fact, they would enjoy it much more.

Posted by: TheeMon

hmmm mine starts the 28-29th'ish PLZ dont remind me about it- im not geting anything 4 school till the 26-27th'ish PLZ DONT BRING IT UP AGAIN *is in total denile of going back to school*

It depends on the person. I found every minute of high school a complete waste of time and agonizing. I got very little if any eductaion from my high school and learned a lot more on my own.

I miss it about as much as a bowl of boiling water being spilled on my head.

Posted by: uh...ok

You've had a bowl of boiling water spilled on your head before?

I am curious. There must be differences in our schooling systems between Canada and the USA. Reason I say this is that over here, University is a higher education then College. The entrance requirements are steeper, and they teach completely different materials for different fields. College is something you go to if you want to be a lab technician, a chef, a forester, a pilot, a construction worker, etc. University on the other hand are those who wants to be a registered accountant, a scientist, a teacher, a programmer, etc. You get a diploma at a College, a degree at University.

Reason why I say this, reading these and previous threads, there seem to be no distinction between University and Collage. Just curious. Am I off base, or not?

Posted by: redwench

yes and no chako.

the term college is just a general term for any school where you get a degree. 2 year colleges give you associate degree. 4 year colleges (universities) give you a bachelors or higher. note that a university can have a college also. so you can get an associates degree from a university.

and frequently, the larger subdivisions of a university are also called colleges, tho you get a 4 year degree. college of arts and sciences, college of education, etc.

confused yet?

Posted by: Kdr Kane

Yep. What she said.

Plus, trade schools are usually call Technical Schools. Although some of those call themselves colleges and universities. There isn't any rule.

All that really matters is accreditation of the school and who accredits the school. And reputation.

There are a lot of diploma mills around. Search the net for that phrase. These are usually accredited by fictional accreditors. They usually have names similar to real universities and may even mislead you to believe that it is a government sponsored school.

Unfortunately, I've been seeing some real accredited universities getting into bed with these diploma mills because there is plenty of money to be made. And they have tight budgets as it is.

Posted by: Chako

Hmmm....there is a difference then. Over here, people definitely say University if they are going for a degree, or college if it is a diploma. Interesting. No such thing as an associate degree either. Degrees start at Bachelor (3 years), Honor (4 yrs) master (5 yrs) and PHD (whenever your done )

Also you can go to Teachers college or a University that specializes in education (here in Canada) that gives you a Bachelor of Ed. Difference is that the BEd holder is pumped up a pay scale compared to the diploma holder.

Posted by: Darky!

Oh, goodie, its that time of year again?

Well, i don't have to worrry about high school and such anymore, only colledge. It's great to be out of school, but you start to miss all your friends and teachers from school, once there gone.

Anyhow, go back to school children, talk to friends, through paper airplanes at the teachers hairnet, and have fun =)

Posted by: redwench

um, teachers dont need a normal bachelors degree there? eeek

Posted by: Chako

Yes Red they do. You need at least a degree before you can go to teachers college or a University that offers the Bed program.

Posted by: uh...ok

From what a teacher once told me...

A college is usually the name of an actual place (like a building) where you learn, go for a degree or whatnot...

A university is actually not a building, but an entire campus with a collection of buildings. These individual ones are, as someone pointed out, sometimes called colleges. Take for example, Columbia University. It consists of 3 undergrad schools (1 college and 2 "schools"), and over 10 grad schools (1 of which is also named a college).

Posted by: Gerbilo

Hrmmm, school started for me a few days ago, thats one of the reasons why i haven't been around here for a little while... All my free time has been doing other things too...

stupid school, doesn't look to be as hard as last year, but it sure could be easier.... lets hope it all goes well

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Hey Gerb, you still VP of your geek-- err-- computer club?

Posted by: Bobaroo

I still got a few weeks left of summer vacation...yippi......school starts for me on Sept 5. My school is a complete waste of time anyway...Go to class and do nothing....and just wind up getting A's every marking period.

Posted by: Digitalphatman

School is what you make of it....yes for some school is a waste of time, whole for others it a wonderful learning experience.

Just b/c it sucked for u doesn't mean it horrible.

Posted by: taco_fox

High School:
A daytime jail for teenagers consisting of endless teachings of your native language, the same scientific method, and few perks including lunch.

There ya go. My bitter view of the public schooling system. I started two weeks ago, and already I feel my mind creeping into 'automatic pilot.'

Bell rings, we move. Bell rings again, we stop. Listen to teachers and write stuff we'll never look at again for the rest of our lives. Bell rings, repeat.

well, i gots ta go do my engish homwork now cause teh teacher told us we hafta do it after all weve only ben studiing it for 12 years now.

Bah.

Posted by: uh...ok

School isn't all that bad. I started my first day today and actually enjoyed it. All my classes look to be really cool (except for Psych AP, I got bad vibes from that class even though I know it's going to be extremely easy... which is probably what I'm worried about)...

Kinda great to be back though.

-uh...ok

Posted by: Bobaroo

School can be good, if u have good teachers. Last year in school i was a freshmen and it was pretty fun because my teachers were cool. School is also a good place to hang out with your friends.

Posted by: TotalRecall

It's all about the teachers. Chako, you better not be giving those kids too much homework!

Posted by: Chako

Who me? Looks all innocent. Actually I don't have a full time class yet. I am still on the supply list this year because there were no openings in the local school board for my subject areas. I will wait and see for a spot in town. May take a few years, but I am patient. Meantime, I get called to substitute for sick or missing teachers. I enjoy the work. Meet lots of different people, work in different schools. Each day is a new experience. So technically I follow closely what the teacher assigns for homework (I have been known however, to shave off some of the workload if I deem it too much). The point of homework is to instill good working discipline, to practice and hence get better at the subject matter, and to finish book work so that new material can be incorporated next class. It should not be used as a punishment tool, given in excess of more then an hours work for all subject matter totaled per night, or to have students work on new material outside of class time prior to teaching the lesson. The main issue is that all teachers have to follow a curriculum. They have only a finite amount of days and a lot of course material to wade through. This is one of the main reasons why homework will never go away. Sad but true. Most teachers, if asked, probably hated homework when they went to school. I know that most would not give any if they could. Problem is, their hands are tied. Rule of thumbs concerning homework: "A little is good, too much is not".

Posted by: TotalRecall

Very true, Chako.

As a student myself, I can tell you homework is not the best method of teaching.

I find that math is the class with the most homework, for many. Teachers assign too many similar problems, which leads the student to using a "cookie-cutter" technique. You aren't given an equation for a problem in real life, you have to create one.

It's easy to overload students and put them into zombie mode, where they rush through the work as fast as possible just to finish. This way, they rarely think of what they are doing. And when a student hits a roadblock at home, they usually have no assistance.

For myself, I find I almost always learn more by working hands-on than studying.

Posted by: redwench

an hour for all subjects? thats 10-15 minutes per subject max. you cant even get started with that. the guidelines here call for about 2 hours per day on average. thats reasonable, since reading assignments for english can take some time.

i really dont see the point in assigning 10 minute homework assignments. i prefer to do what i did at a community college, which is give a weekly written assignment. that allows the students to manage thier own time.

Posted by: Chako

Red, I think you misunderstood. There will be days when you may have 3 hours of homework a night, some days you get lucky and get none. Another thing you have to remember is this. !5 to 30 minutes of homework may take some students hours to finish. I find usually the teacher can do the stuff much quicker then the student. So a little "common sense" is needed. There is no exact science for this stuff (regardless of any guidelines, and yes, we have the same time guidelines here), and everyone is different. Likewise, homework should technically get longer in the higher grades because it should prepare students for college or university. Besides, if the student is snowballed under homework, then what gain is there? The last thing any educator wants is to have students give up in frustration.

Posted by: redwench

if a homework assignment is supposed to take 15 minutes, and it takes a student hours, they are in the wrong class. big time. i know that if it takes me 20 minutes to do, it should take students about an hour. but if it takes me 5 minutes, then it should take them about 15 minutes. if they take over half an hour, they need to see about taking another class.

Posted by: Chako

Posted by: Digitalphatman

Whats the rate of Converiosn on that? For every hour it takes you to do something, it takes a student at least 15 minutes? I am lost. Does grade level count for this.

Just becasue it takes the student a little longer doesn't always mean that they shouldn't be in the class. It just might take them somewhat longer to do it. Sheesh, not everyone can get everyhing done in the same amount of time.

I feel that people do not give enough credit to homework. It actually is a great tool for helping students(who choose to do it, and not copy) to learn.

Posted by: Scav

School In a Nutshell:

From very young you are told lies. If the teachers told you the truth about everything in first grade you would never move on to second. Who wants to hear about how the civil war was more an economic struggel then a morel battle. No its much easier to tell people that the good people wanted to stop the bad people.

Homework goes through two phases in your school career:

-Grade to High School Homework:

To establish a sense of time management and duty. Reinforces material learned in school somewhat. (personal opinion should not excede what is necessary and not be given just to give as it is common to do in highschool)

-College:

You get 2 hours of homework for every hour you have class. A unit = 1 hour of class time. So if you are a full time student (12 units) you can expect about 36 hours of school work a week. Homework in college is the oposite of homework in highschool. In college the learning is done at home and reinfoced in school.

AND EVERYONE BUYS THEIR DAMN BACK TO SCHOOL JUNK FROM STAPLES. I WISH THEY WOULD STOP!

and um... ok.

Posted by: uh...ok

Math homework is a MUST. Without homework, there is NO chance in HELL you are going to understand the material.

I personally have zero problems with math (took Calc last year, scored a 5 on AB AP exam; currently taking Calc BC)... I don't study much. But I guess I'm one of the lucky people. But even though I don't study, I do the homework. Because without it, I'd be completely lost in that class.

Although some classes DO feel like the teacher's punishing you with homework... but I've also been lucky in that respect, I've had really good teachers in all these years of HS (grammar school = different story) who hardly ever assign BS homework.

Kinda agree with Scav for the most part about the generalizations...

Except Civil War wasn't fought primarily for economic reasons... it was politics more than anything (the Norther industry really didn't "need" the South, as shown by the failure of King Cotton to turn the tide of the war). The basic issue of Federal Government vs. States' Rights. Anyway that's a separate subject on its own.

Oh and I don't get supplies at Staples. I got to Office Depot nowadays, but usually I simply recycle (reuse stuff from previous years).

But I remember back in the grammar school days, every year we had to get new school supplies (oh it was so much fun!) and then we'd go to this place near Army Street (in SF)... I forgot what the place was called. It was the age before Office Depot came into existence... before Target grew big and Walmart came to the Bay Area...

-uh...ok

Posted by: uh...ok

But don't get me wrong, I don't "like" homework. In fact, I hate it very much.

I always said that I loved everything about school except for homework. "I'd love school if I didn't have to do any homework." Except that's not possible because without it, I'd probably fail a good portion of my tests.

-uh...ok

Posted by: Bobaroo

Yea school is awsome except for the hw. i wish my school would do more labs, i enjoy hands on stuff.

Posted by: redwench

yep, homework is a necessary evil. do you think we want to grade this crap? its more work for the teacher than it is for the student, most of the time. most teachers have 100+ students. so even one assignment a week will take a teacher 2 or more hours to grade and record. and thats something like math. an essay would take even longer.

homework is assigned as uhok said, to reinforce what is learned in class. there simply is not enough time to cover any decent amount of material if all work is done in class. more so in college, of course.

Posted by: Gerbilo

No laggy, I'm not VP of the "Computer Science Club" I've moved on, I'm now President

anyway, yeah i like the way radarblip put it heheh

school is just annoying me right now, I took more classes than I should have, I'm a senior now and I was thinking that this year might make a difference in me getting into colleges, yeah, right.... I have far too much homework, this year is supposed to be a blowoff year, i've had homework everyday so far for 1-3 hours.... it might not sound like much but it is!!....
I'm just sick of normal school... i'm on my 13th year, ug......

tomorrow is gonna be bad, I gotta write a speech, got a few tests, gonna have a bunch of homework, gotta mow the lawn and got work from 5:30-10:30... arg.....

anyway, oh well...

Posted by: Gerbilo

Hrmm, this is gonna be the topic that I will vent school stuff at.... i'm still angry about what I was saying earlier... why do I have so much homework? I don't mind school if I don't have homework, I sorta think of it as a job... with homework, that's like another job... one that is annoying... argg....

anyway, here is my schedule for this year, not nearly as easy as AK47's he has an overall easier school from what I can tell....

anyway!!!

1st semester ----------- 2nd semester
American Government -- Economics
Earth Science ------------- Earth Science
Psychology ---------------- Theology
Stats/Probability --------- Trigonometry

awwww...cry me a river about homework

Quit yer beafin'! At least your a senior now. And yes, my scheduel is a cake walk.

Posted by: Chako

Yes, teachers tend to have long work days. I usually finish around 7PM on a school day after all the correcting, lesson planing, and general organization. When at school, I don't have a minute to myself. Even use my lunch time productively, fighting with all the staff for the photocopiers.

Here are a few helpful links in regard to homework (reference material).

withdrawal from something?

In Ontario, High School students get 8 courses a year. First semester is 5 months long, and comprises of 4 classes (ditto for second semester). School starts at 8:55 and finishes at 3:00 (this differs from school boards across Ontario though). We do not teach Psychology and Theology as a subject. If you think your interested in that junk up here, the university offers a little 3 credit intro course to see if you would want a career in it.

Posted by: DemonBob

Heres my schedule

LOL

1st Comp Science (C++) I am a teacher in this class cause I already took it and passed buit the teacher requested me back in it to help her teach LOL
2nd Dig Graphics/webmaster
3rd English 4
4th Fine Arts Survey (Droping the class replacing with going home)
5th Intro to College alg
6th Comp Arictecture (A+ cert)
7th ROTC

Droping FIne Arts Survey as of tomarrow. Cause I can already see that the teacher is predijuce agianst me. And shows a big attitude towards me.

And from 6pm to 9 pm every Mon, Wed, and friday.

Sysdoc(networking cert). At the state votech school

Posted by: redwench

ok, quick question. whats intro to college algebra? the only algebra that they taught at my college was remedial.

Posted by: Gerbilo

hehehe, oh well

stupid school, finally had a day without homework today

AK, go build your bed!!

Posted by: DemonBob

@ wench

It's a class oftered to high school students..............It's not really intro to college alg its bascially the first alg in college...the college and the high school have and agreement saying that if yo u pass it you get high school credit, and 3 hours college credit. Plus you can start out with the next highest math course.

Posted by: AK47

here is my scheduel- woods, study hall, lunch

Posted by: Kdr Kane

Chako,

You said it, I didn't. That was a high flyer.

Posted by: uh...ok

Man you guys are so lucky, your high school actually teaches you guys useful stuff. We don't even have anything CLOSE to a CS class here, or A+ classes.

As for my schedule... at my school we take 6 courses a year, each course broken down into 2 semesters.

1- Government and Politics AP
2- Calculus BC (AP)
3- Physics Honors (also taking AP test)\
4- Psychology AP
5- English 7/8 AP
6- Free Period
7- Senior Scholar Seminar (once a week, at night, 2 hours per session)

-uh...ok

Posted by: Chako

The local High Schools have a program going on for the last few years with Cisco. Upper year students can get their Cisco network Cert by taking this course (Since I am not in the business Dept, I am not sure what the certification is called).

What is a "3 hours college credit"?
What is a "senior scholar seminar"?

Vast differences between the Canadian and American school systems.

Kane, I am still waiting to see if I was close.

Posted by: redwench

senior school seminar is whatever the school wants it to be.

3 hours college credit is about one university class, on a semester basis. not significant really.

Posted by: uh...ok

Seminar is a class that tries to emulate a college philosophy/literature class. We meet only once a week for two hours during the evening.

We have two seminar classes. One "regular" seminar class that meets daily for 45 minutes, and the scholar seminar is the one that meets once a week.

As the name suggests, Scholar Seminar is for those in our Scholar Program (bunch of elitist bastrats)... basically for anyone who is literately-inclined (if that's even a word/phrase) with good grades and good recommendations from teachers. Out of a class of 300 or so, we only have about 30-35 people in the Scholar Program.

Yes, my school has this also. I'm in the class, it's for CCNA certification. It's a 4 semester plan.
