ok for some reason I cannot get into safe mode on my XP Home. I restart the computer, press F8 for the boot menu, and all it gives me is the devices to load an OS from (ie. HDD, Floppy, Network, etc.). what am I doing wrong?

Some mobos don't use F8 for the booting options. Some use the ' Del ' key. Try that. If it doesn't work look in manual or go to your mobo's home page to see what the trigger is.

mk I can't find ANYWHERE where Safe Mode is even mentioned... And I went to my mobo's site, and no luck there either. This is what kind of mobo I have if it helps: ECS Mainboard Socket A K7S5A PRO

thanks

Go to start>run type "msconfig" hit enter. On the boot.ini tab if you see "/safeboot" put a check in the box and then select minimal beside it. Reboot and it should boot into safe mode. Just remember to change it back before you reboot in order to start in normal mode.

mk kool, and also, is there a way to get a command line outside of windows command prompt? I was looking for the option of safe mode w/ command line.

thanks

Hmmm... Well, I found this:

When you boot into a safe-mode configuration, the boot loader NT Loader (NTLDR) passes to the kernel (ntoskrnl.exe) an associated switch as a command-line parameter, with any switches you have specified in the boot.ini file for the installation you are booting. If you boot into any safe mode, NTLDR passes the /SAFEBOOT: switch. NTLDR appends one or more additional strings to /SAFEBOOT:, depending on which type of safe mode you select. For standard safe mode, NTLDR appends MINIMAL, and adds NETWORK for networking-enabled safe mode. NTLDR adds MINIMAL(ALTERNATESHELL) for safe mode with command prompt and DSREPAIR for DS-repair mode.

That would suggest to me that you would click on the option "minimal(alternate shell)" beside the "/safeboot" instead of "minimal".

Anyway, here's the page where I found that info. Hope it helps.
