i have my and my bros PCs hooked up with a cross over cable and before my format i had the net going to his PC and working fine but i cant remember what i did and cant find any place telling me how to set it up
does anyone here know how to setup a cross over cable connection so my bro get net too??

It sounds like you were using some Internet connection-sharing software before you formatted. What version of Windows are you using? I'm not sure about other versions, but both 98 SE and XP come with built-in connection-sharing software.

im using XP and i tried using the net connect thing that auto sets it up or whatever but that didnt work

I've never configured the XP ICS myself, but I can probably help.
If using the network setup wizard didn't work, you can configure ICS manually. If you're on a broadband connection, look here for steps:

If you're on a dial-up connection, look here:

If nothing has changed with your brother's computer, you shouldn't have to do anything special to get his Internet access working. What operating system is your brother's computer running? Did you run ipconfig on his computer to check to see if he's getting an IP address? If you ran ipconfig, what was your brother's "default gateway"?

well after my format i did try other things on both his and my PCs to try to get net working =\ bleh im dumb and im sure it changed some settings...
hes also running XP and i did ipconfig, it looks like hes getting a IP but theres nothing under default gateway

The problem is simple: you formatted and you didn't write down what your settings were for sharing the connection. If you used XP's software and you can remember the settings you used, the problem will be solved.

it looks like hes getting a IP

Uhh... either he got an IP or he didn't. If the IP was 169.254 or something like that, that means he isn't actually getting one. If his computer is configured for DHCP and he can't get an IP, you could always manually configure his connection settings.
From the same website, here's a guide on how you would configure a client XP computer to share a connection with ICS:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com...s/clientwiz.htm
If there was nothing under default gateway, then that's the primary reason he can't get on the Internet - packets sent from his machine aren't getting to yours, and they need to go to yours if he wants to surf the Web.
Did you check the connection settings (ipconfig) of the network card in your computer that your brother is connected to?

it is getting a 169.254 ip =\
i followed the thing on his PC and nothing still no net also i ran ipconfig on my pc for the networked card and theres no default gateway there either =\
also b4 my format i didnt use any software to set it up i just told one of the card things to share net connection and it worked =\ i dunno whats going on i wish i knew more about this

also on my bros PC hes getting the 169.254 ip but on my pc it shows 192.168 for the IP

On your computer, the IP address for the network card connected to your brother's network card should be 192.168.0.1. If it is, ICS is configured correctly on your computer.
Go to the connection properties of your brother's network card, select the TCP/IP protocol entry in the white box and click Properties. Select the radio button labeled "Use the following IP address:", and put in the following info:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Click OK to save your changes, and then try accessing the Internet on your brother's computer again. What you are doing is manually configuring his TCP/IP settings, which should work if ICS is set up properly on your computer but your brother can't get an IP from DHCP.

still nothing, but i think were getting closer when i try to go onto the web or connect to ventrilo with his pc it seems to really try to get on...

Can your brother ping 192.168.0.1? If he can, then that means his computer can communicate with yours, which is the first step to getting all this to work.
Can your brother ping 64.233.161.99? If he can, have him type it into his web browser's address bar. If the Google website comes up, he can connect to the Internet just fine, but he's having a DNS issue. On your computer, at the command prompt, type ipconfig/all and check to see what DNS servers you're using. In your brother's TCP/IP properties, choose to manually configure his DNS settings and put in two of the DNS servers from ipconfig. Click OK and then see if your brother can browse Web pages without typing in a site's IP address.

wow heh smith is smart/fast
wacheif, if hes only geting the first 2 sets of the ip then hes only geting the general part of the ip address and it/you havent asigned the computer a specific address, ie 192.168.0.1
so do what he says and finish the wrest of the ip address(he allrdy did it) then hopefuly it might work
dude is that right? i took 3 semesters of cisco ccna, just wanna know if the knowledge seeped in my brain
