Can't click on links

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Vaness

Hi,

Lately i have been unable to click on any links, nothing appears on the screen when i click on them, not even a blank page. Theres a short description on the bottom left corner saying error on page. And when i put my cursor on it( without clicking, it says
javascipt: void(accessPOp));

Any advice?

Thanks

On internet explorer go to Tools/Internet Options/Security/Internet/Custom Level... then scroll down, you'll see three sections related to 'Scripting'... change these to enable. That should do it.

Thanks for your help, i just checked the settings on Scripting, they are all already on enable. The problem persists.

Try reinstalling Internet Explorer ..

Posted by: ZLRAC

Are you running any spyware blocking programs? I had a problem similar to yours once and it was caused by this program that messed with Internet Options to make everything safer, but in actuallity made everything internet explorer does less functional.

Try Reseting Internet Explorer Options (Internet Options, advanced, Reset Deafaults.)
After That Go To Internet Options, Programs, Reset Web Settings

I just reset everything back to default, but still not working. I have McAfee firewall and Ad-aware installed on my computer. I have been experiencing this problem ever since i downloaded MSN messenger 6.2. And now I can't open any links ( anything that needs to be opened in a new window) On top of that, my McAfee virus scan is not running neither. It says that some components of the ActiveShield are missing, McAfee failed to initialize correctly. Because my computer is in safe mode, or because its not properly installed. So i tried to reinstall it but for some reason, the installation process fails everytime.

So its quite frustrating.

Well?
remove msn messebnger and just 2 let u know any mseenger slows down ur connection !
thats why i only use email.

Have you installed any pop-up killers lately?

Since mcafee isn't working either, it could be a virus. Try the free scan at Housecall's site and see if it finds anything.

Posted by: Vaness

I tried the scan, didn't detect any virus.

Posted by: DiabloFather

try removing MSn Msnger !

Posted by: Vaness

yes did that too.

Posted by: DiabloFather

ok i don't know what to do.
Reformatting Your Computer Should solve the problem.
i think its a virus or worm.

if u need instructions on formating your harddrive just tell me

Posted by: Vaness

Yes it would be great if you could give me the instructions. I was seriously thinking completely restore the computer.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Before you do something drastic like reformatting, I would first suggest visiting the following links first:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- select and download all critical updates if you can

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
- get a second opinion on virus possibility by doing the free online scan

Finally, does this error happen on "every" page you visit? Do you get the same error when you click on any of the links here (obviously not if you can post the question, but I wanted to make sure). Coz some pages have their javascript all funky and stuff and could cause some problems with IE. What page(s) were you visiting when you got the error?

Restoring your computer would definitely solve things for you. One last thing you could try is restoring a previous version of your registry. If you don't know a way to do this, here's what you can do... Windows 98- select Start, Shut Down, click Restart in MS-DOS mode, and click OK. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type scanreg /restore (don't forget to put a space before the slash) and press Enter. Select the oldest back-up listed, a date before you started having problems, then press enter again. Windows ME & XP- Select Start, Programs (All Programs in XP) , Accessories, System Tools, System Restore to bring up the System Restore Wizard. Select Restore my computer to an earlier time, follow suggestion above. Good luck, if that doesn't fix things for you, get with DiabloFather on a system restore/format.

Just saw Canis' post. Do that too!

Big thanks to all of you guys for your help.

Trend Virus scan didn't detect any virus. And i couldn't dwl the critical updates, my computer is unresponsive when i click INSTALL NOW.
As for the error, I can't open any link that requires to be opened in a new page. And i couldnt open those 2 links Canis Lupus listed, I had to copy and paste.

Yes, i also tried Sytem Restore, but for some reason, that option was turned off until i realized i need to use it, the system only started recording after the problem surfaced. so i don't have any recorded restore point that i can go back to.

So, is restoring my computer to the factory setting my only option now?

Posted by: ZLRAC

That may be your only option. However, first check out...

...You may find something there that will solve your problem.

Reformatting should only be done as a last resort.

You mentioned that you're running a McAfee firewall software. If this is the case, the firewall could have your internet connection locked down. Try disabling your McAfee firewall and see what effect it has.

If you don't have a firewall after all, then the problem is probably with some of your Windows system files. An easier way to try to remedy this, instead of jumping right to a reformat, would be to let the System File Checker rewrite your Windows system files back to default. You will need your original Window XP cdrom for this operation.

Go to Run -> type in: sfc /scannow -> Make sure the Windows XP CDrom is in the drive

It will run for anywhere from a couple of minutes to 5 minutes or more as it repairs and rewrites your OS system files. When this is done, go first to Windows Update and, if its working, reinstall any critical updates it may list.

I hope this works for you. It sounds like your OS is in pretty bad shape. If all else fails, just do what your gut says to do.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem as Vaness. I can't open any link that requires to be opened in a new window. Also I couldnt open those 2 links Canis Lupus listed, I had to copy and paste. I tried all of the suggestions in the previos replies. Any ideas would be appreciated. Seeing how there weren't any further postings by Vaness maybe you have the solution?
