Repairing Old Compaq w/98 OS

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have an old Compaq Presario 5240 that has windows 98 on it that was given to me. I am trying to get it up and running for my niece for her writing. problem is,

When I cleaned the computer I found that the HD was partitioned, near as I can tell, half of the OS is on the C drive, while half is on the D drive, (CD rom is labeled H)

I have no system restore disks for the computer and cannot get into windows ever since I did a disk defrag.

It goes through boot up, and as soon as windows starts to open, I get an error message of

a file: c:\windows\system\MSVCRT.DLL not found
as soon as I click OK, I get a white box that states Error in Explorer.exe

then computer completely locks up in MSTASK

is there anything I can do to get rid of the partition and repair the problem?

if u have the windows installation cd u might wanna put it in and then turn on the computer.
that shoud let u install windows without having 2 go into windows itself

You can find the dll file here download it and put it on a floppy. Then boot into DOS and copy it to the directory from the floppy.

If you problem started after you did defrag, it can mean that your hard driver is faulty.
The missing file is there but in bad sector, that does happend with old hard drivers, seen lots of that during the years.
Windows 98 is a pain, even if you did run FDISK via win98 boot disk and clear all the old partitions, activating only C partition and formating it via format c:/s you would be fashed with the problems installing the motherboard (Chipset), audio and SVGA drivers (especially with compaq all the enhanchement software and diagnostic programs), been there quite few times (in the land of the lost thoughts)...

But as Treckspycho advices try it first, hope it will work.
