D2 KILLED by Patch 1.09

Nice one Blizzard! V1.09 fixes loads of things....
EXCEPT!
Now I cant play the game!
Why? "Please insert the D2 expansion game disk"
But its in the &%$ drive! You stupid machine! you are runing the code from it -Idiot!
"Please insert the D2 expansion game disk"
Okay calm down surly Blizzard have realised that there is a problem with their stinking patch. Ok I'll try the website support. What's it say. But hang on. If my copy worked with version 1.08 there shouldn't be a problem! And the reference at the website is for installation not for the patch and it doesn't work anyway!
SO... now I can't log on to talk to Blizzard tech anyway on Battlenet.l If I reinstall it will only reinstall the patch 1.09. (Anyone ever seen Catch 22?) Blizzards tech line is jammed (And its international rate from here and there is no way I'm waiting for "you are 1022 in the queue to be answered (plink plink fizz music in the background)". And Blizzards tech support email is renowned for not answering tech questions anyway (Unless you happen to be a member of the press that is!)
Perhaps it's better to hack out the cd protection software from it and release a copy so all us legit owners can play the game!
Your's severely pissed Warcore!
(Repeat the mantra "I will never buy another Blizzard product ever again .. I will never ..... Repeat ad infinitum)

Blizzard use a system called securom v2, this uses a little used format which (HAH!) supposedly make an uncopiable game (yeah right) By switching drives you ahve used another drive which is about to read the format, thats all.
But what about those people who have bought the game and have a system which only has one drive.
And why now have the instigated the security system, when the game was bought pre 1.09 patch it worked fine. So I'm expected to buy a new CD drive because their security system sucks?
This is not only unfair, ut since it is unlikely that I would get a refund. Toshiba who make my drive have not release a firmware update (and are unlikely to since they have superceeded the drive now) so where does that leave a fully paid up user with the real mc'coy disks books et.c
I have invested £80 + on the expansion, the game and books, and hundreds of hours playing it. Now Blizzard implement the security system, and it's screwed?
Well canopis lupus (Cos I know youre watching this thread) If you think that is the correct way to treat a customer then Blizzard can kiss my furry butt!

Hehe, if you think this is the correct place to complain to Blizzard, then you are welcome to kiss mine
Open Tech Support is not affiliated with, supported or subsidized by Blizzard Entertainment - this site is made up of generous and helpful volunteers who are not getting anything for trying to help you out. What we do here is our business, not Blizzard's or any other game company's. So if you are happy with barking up the wrong tree, be my guest. Just don't be mad if we enforce OUR own policies here regarding pirated software...
And that's MISTER Canopis Lupus to you, bub

As a follow-up, I would like to add that we understand your problem - a lot of other people are also experiencing it. We hope you have your problem fixed soon (but I guess that's all up to Blizz).

Blizzard support wants us to upgrade our firmware - I received this from my DVDcdrw creator.
Toshiba supplies CD-ROMs for Different Computer Manufacturer. The different
firmware(oem or other) has caused lots of user errors. Toshiba no longer
offers the Firmware for downloading. Here at Toshiba Storage Device Division
we have no control of this situation, nor do we have any firmware software
available.
With regard to Pirate software. I own original copies of both games, and according to FACT I am permitted to make a backup copy of the game for my own use, therefore I, am not pirating the game. With regard to the legality of software which defeats copy protection. That law doesnt exist in this country and there are no test cases yet bought before the Courts.
And besides, those who use and trade pirate software will find the websites I mentioned (which you censored) without any help from me. Those who legitimately own the software and are locked out of the game are the loosers. Loosers who will think twice before purchasing another Blizzard game again.
When a copy protection scheme affects the legitimate users of the software, it's time for a serious re-think.
While I understand your sentiments Canopus, with regard to protecting your forum, the statements I make here are fully of my own devices, I am absolutely willing to take any personal responsibilities for my statements.
And besides, my butt is less hairy than a wolfs!

I'm having a very similar problem - immediately upon upgrading to 1.09, the game refuses to start. And what's more, it crashes my system totally if I try to kill the task and start over. I once let it sit for half an hour with no result other than locking the puter up :P I've already attempted totally uninstalling and reinstalling, then applying the patch from Battle.Net from scratch with the same results. This has made my game totally unusable! Not only that, but now my clan thinks I'm skipping out on all their meetings and crap. ARRRRRRGH!!
The thing that pisses me off the most, though, is that on blizzard.com and battle.net, there's been absolutely no mention of this at all, even though it's getting clearer that it's a pretty widespread problem. Hope they at least post something about it soon and maybe even FIX it so I can get back on before my account is deleted :P

I've got the same problem as Yer Mom has. After patching to LOD 1.09 whenever I try and load the game it locks up my computer and requires a manual reset. The game runs fine on my laptop (uses Win ME), but simply will not run on my desktop. I've reinstalled 3 times. Used the 1.09 patch from the Blizzard website the first two times, and I patched from Battle.net the third time.

At great personal expense, I called Blizzard Tech Support and sat on hold for almost an hour and a half after wading through their awful automated support system to bring this exclusively to you!
The problem lies mostly with an incompatibility with the memory and HD controller in certain VIA chipsets (most notably KT-133 and KT-133a) that hurl chunks when fed the 1.09 copy protection crap. There are 2 things to try, one of which will almost assuredly solve your problem...
1) Download the latest 4-in-1 patch from www.viahardware.com and install it. This may or may not solve it, but try it. If it doesn't work, you'll have crashed your computer again but at least you'll have newer drivers
2) Switch your CD ROM IDE connection. That is, if it's a master, switch it to slave or vice versa. This will almost definitely solve your problem. If it doesn't, and you're one of us who spent the extra $ to buy a RAID board you can try hooking up to the HPT 370 controller. I haven't tried this so play with the master/slave to see if it works.
Any ?'s feel free to PM or ICQ or email me as necessary

Well since I was running version 4.29 of the VIA 4in1's I downloaded version 4.32 and tried running D2. Didn't work. But... I then changed the jumper on my CD-ROM from master to slave, loaded up D2, and what do ya know.. it worked. Good job getting the fix man . Too bad it took all that fuss just to get around Blizzard's crappy "protection." All that protected, was me, from getting to play the game I bought. Go figure. Anyway, thanks a lot man - who knows how long it'll take Blizzard to "fix" it.

Clarification: I didn't try hooking the cd rom up to the RAID controller. I DID do the switch master/slave on the primary controller and that worked for me. Just want to avoid any misunderstanding

i did all the stuff you guys said except the via stuff... the cd-rom is on slave.
What kinda harddrive do i need to run the via software.
I have a abit bx6 motherboard...

I'm pretty sure you're not experiencing the same problem as we are Rage. Could you post exact details of what's going on with your problem? The reason I dont' think it's the same is because your motherboard doesn't have the VIA chipset that mine and saberx's does. Yours has the Intel 440BX chipset, which as far as I know isn't specifically having a problem with this patch. Which means you don't have to do the VIA update either - your board doesn't have anything on it from VIA at all.
Anyway as I said could you post exact details of your problem? Not guaranteeing we can help but we'll give it a good shot

Interesting.
The fact that blizz's copy protection isn't compatible with the via 686x southbridge (on some machines only... d2x runs fine on my machine), is a greivous oversight. The via southbridge is probably in half the computers out there, since it's a very inexpensive solution. It's even in a large amount of intel based boards.
Just another argument against copy protection. It doesn't truly stop piracy (anyone determined enough can pirate anything), but it truly DOES hurt legitimate users.
The argument that it prevents 'casual' copying is true... but simple bad sector copy protection will do that. No reason to get all super incompatible to do it.
Oh well. If you want to rant about this, there is a great thread going about blizzard.here

Please notice, that in Higpoint Bios from v. 1.11 and onwards connecting ATAPI devices like CD-ROM's to the RAID controller is disabled.
Thus making the master/slave fix the only way.
So, if you have an Abit RAID board with up to date BIOS you will not be able to succesfully connect your CD/DVD drive to the RAID (Highpoint) controller.

My excact problem is i install d2, then i start playing. go to battle.net and it downloads the patch then it restarts the game like it does after it gets the patch then it freezes. After i reboot and click on the diablo2 icon it just sits there with my cd-rom spining(or at least the read light is on) and nothing will work on the computer. The mouse will move but i cant ctrl-alt-del. And i cant click on anything. I also tried installing d2 then downloaded the patch from blizzard.com and installed it that way. It does the same thing.
My cd-r is on slave and i downloaded all the new drivers for all my hardware but it still wont work
I have a
P3-500
256 Ram
Abit bx6
Viper 550 tnt vid card
Win 2000 (i installed win98 and tried that but it didnt work either)
cd-r = mitsumi CR-4801TE
also i just pushed manual eject button on the cd-r when i thought it was locked up and i took the cd out and waiting for about 2 mins then the computer came back and i could do stuff again. Does this mean it is a cd-r problem? The game worked perfectly up untill this last patch.
Do you guys think i might just need a new cd-rom?
Thanks

Auggie: Thx for the info - saves me taking the time to try that out
oORageOo: That problem does sound remarkably similar. First thing I'd check in your configuration is make sure you have the latest firmware for your CD-R (I know you said you got all new drivers but a lot of ppl don't consider firmware part of drivers so I thought I'd include it).
Second thing I'd do is go to Blizzard's support site and check their D2 troubleshooter - it's fairly extensive and has a number of config changes for specific systems (don't remember them off the top of my head but I remember having to wade through all of them several times...)
Third on the list is, if possible, change your CD-R to master on the secondary IDE channel and see if that works. It's a long shot but what do you have to lose?
If none of the above work, ummmm...call Blizzard? I found that I got to a person quicker if I did their stupid auto-troubleshooter first rather than going right into the queue. Wish I had more info for ya but I'm not God

I got it to work somehow... I installed it on my smaller hardrive 16(gig maxtor)... and i installed it... when i was done i went in just like normal and battle.net updated and stuff it looked like it wasent working so i decided to take a shower and left it siting there. when i got back it was on. I am confused. I waited for like 5 mins before when i was installing it with no avail. So i am not sure what happened. anyone know?

Well, I'm having this STRANGE problem...
of course it is extreamly similar to Yer mom's problem. the game starts as a autorun screen. I click on the button that says: Play Diablo II : The Lord of Destruction, then the CD-rom hums just as normal. I have a moving icon on my system tray(a box on the bar with the START button), which is a anti-Virus program. suddenly the moving icon freezes, the drive stops humming, and the mouse cursor refuses to move. this is a new problem I faced since 1.09. nothing like this happened before.. untill now since that 1.09 is out... so I did a hard reboot(by unpluging and repluging the power cord, since my restart button does not work), quited all the programs running exept "explorer" and "sysTray"(since without these the windows wouldn't work), reinstalled D2, upgraded to exp again, then downloaded 1.09, then tried playing. the game refuses to start anyway. I switched CD-rom drive from master to slave, tried again, and it started once, and never again. also I tried all the things on blizzard tech support, all does not work. and last I tried that turning off the "RAID" but I don't have RAID on my mother board. I tried that downloading hard drive patch and that doesn't work either. so now all I play is god damn METAL SLUG 3!! and sometimes play unreal tournament. my friend burrowed my Starcraft, so I couldn't play that. so, anybody have any ideas about this problem?
oh, here's my system info.
Genuine Intel Pentium III processor without MMX
x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6
Microsoft Windows 98 second version
128 RAM memory
30 gigabyte Hard drive : Master
48x CD rom drive (not DVD nor CD-r) : Slave
and I have Direct draw, Direct 3D, and a good sound card, which all works for my D2exp. D2 isn't starting AFTER 1.09 patch.
All of the solves I can find around does not work. I wish I could play with my cute Pally again... (level 24 Paladin)
