restoration process from safe mode win 98

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello....thanks for listening.
I have win 98 on my laptop. After being on the internet for a while, it froze and now I cant even start up windows. I can start up safe mode command prompt, so I have a dos prompt. I have the restoration disk (cd), and want to just start over. I dont mind losing anything in my computer...I am selling it anyway. How can I restore to factory condition from the safe mode command (dos) prompt [C:\]?
thanks tree

Hi again,
Second thought. Thanks again for this helpful site.
I have looked through the other forums about win98 and safe mode and nothing addresses my problem. I can not get into windows on safe mode. The dos commands are all saying bad command (or maybe I dont know the right commands) hummmm
Well, the ultimate goal is to restore the computer to factory.. How ever that has to happen.
When I load the cd restore disk the computer just goes round and round....
I have tried everything I know, which is not much...hee heee

If the CD is the OEM CD that came with the laptop then you run trhrough the installation option, it should do FDISK and formating automatically and installs the WIn 98 and the motherboard drivers, but if the CD is not for the laptop you need windows 98 boot disk.
1) start the laptop with the win 98 boot disk (floppy).
2) choose option to start with the CD rom support
3) on A DOS promt type FDISK and press Enter (Return)
4) Clear all the old partitions and activate new C partition
5) start the laptop again with the win boot disk with CD rom support and on A DOS promt type
format c:/s
6) when format done (it takes about 30 - 60 minutes) then at A DOS promt type E:/ and press Enter
7) at E DOS promt type setup.exe and press Enter, well that should start the installation.
8) Have you windows 98 Key nearby.

N.B. If the Windows 98 is the only CD you have then you will have to some way get to the internet and download the motherboard drivers for that laptop.

If you have an OEM restore disk that came with the laptop, (not the Windows 98 CD) you should be able to boot from the CD and run the restore disk. Change you boot order so that the CD-Rom boots first and boot with the restore disk in the CD-rom. It should boot from the restore disk and start the restoration process.

Ok guys...I am not sure what the two posts meant, but I think that it is something I tried. I have the Compaq Armada E500 Restore CD (there are 2 cds)
I put the first one in the computer then I turned on the computer and I heard the cd drive making the noise...trying to do its thing. But then nothing happends. The monitor lands on the windows splash screen but it never goes to windows or even asks me to do safe mode. Eventually there is a black screen that says:

While initializing device VKD:
Windows protection error. (and the flashing curser is here but will not take in any key strokes

If I manually go to safe mode (ie F8) I can get to the safe mode and other stuff menu. there are 6 prompts in all. This is where I end up with the dos prompt if thats what I want. But then I dont think this mode of operation sees the D (cd) drive.
I truely appreciate your patients.
What should I do next?
Do i go to dos or something else?
thanks so much for even trying to sort out this weird thing for me.

Yes Safe mode doesn't allow CD ROm use.
Check your friends that if any of them have or can do a Windows 98 starter floppy for you and come to help you with the procedure. When you seen it once and made notes of it then you will be able to understand the process.
Normally it is possible to get to the BIOS setting via DEL, END, ESC and with Compaq F10 (if I remember correctly), but if you are not sure, do not mess arround BIOS again ask a PC nerd friend to come and show the procedure (to be safe).
That model should have CD Rom as one of the bootable devices at least as default.
The boot order 1) Floppy 2) CD Rom 3) HDD
