Lag problems with 3 people playing NS

Hey there! I'm hosting a lan party with some friends of mine. Right now there are only 3 people here. We have been trying to play some Natural Selection, but it is very laggy (upwards of 500 ping)

(also note that we are sharing a DSL connection 512/128; and I'm aware that DSL is limited in bandwidth, just not sure how many people should be able to play on it reliably. Later once everyone gets here we're playing LAN only)

The setup:

My Sprint DSL modem (bridged)

V
My Linksys Access Point/Router (setup as a gateway, tried it as router and it didn't work)

1 2 3 4

The Linksys AP/Router is model BEFW11S. It is actually an access point router with 4 port switch. I'm pretty knowledgable in networking, but can't seem to figure out why we are lagging so bad with just 3 people trying play NS. If it is due to the DSL I can live with that. I just wanted to make sure there were no settings I could change in the router that would route packets better. I had tried to set the router as a router and not a gateway, but everyone lost the internet connection. So I'm at a loss as what to do, other than just play lan games. This post is probably for someone who is pretty knowledgable in networking as well.

Thanks for any help!
