I got bitten by a someone's pet rat today. I washed my finger and as I was sucking up the rest of the blood, I was told the rat has cancer.
wench told me it was nothing to worry about but I know nothing about diseases and I dont wanna get rat cancer. so if anyone thinks this is something to worry about please tell me before its too late...

im concerned about the dutch education system if a 20 year old man thinks he can get cancer from a rat bite. cancer is cause by mutations or damage to the dna. so for the last time, STOP FRETTING.

I've never known human cancer to be contagious... however I think rat cancer is contagious and very deadly!
~SuperSlinky (Can't they cure cancer in rats and mice?)

Looks at sniper with a strange look. You cannot get Cancer that way. However, I would be more concerned about infection. Rats, even pet rats are not known to be the cleanest animals. Their bite can often lead to complications such as infection. Go get the wound checked by a doctor or use some good strong disinfectants and clean the wound really good.

too be on the safe side, you should state your concerns to a doctor or vet...AND QUICKLY!!! for sure the Rat should be quarantined until it is determined it doesn't have Rabies...Although I agree that cancer
is not caught, once animal cells start mutating, other
contagions can follow...certain flea borne diseases come to mind, like the ones that decimated Europe in the Dark Ages...

Rats are the cleanest pet I've ever seen.

*thinks to himself*
umm.. umm... umm.. cancer?!?! do you mean rabies?!?
Posted by: redwench
no, he means cancer. its a pet rat, so no rabies.

I dont understand why someone would have a pet rat- especially one that bites people..

My daughter wanted it, I can't say no to her. And he only bit you if you stuck your finger through the bars or raised your hand over him. If you pulled him out of his cage and held him, he was the nicest pet ever.
I was amazed. A pet rat is exceptional and very bright. He died an old death at 2 years old.

Red is right, I would not be worried about rabies because it is a pet. Animal bites are often full of bacteria though. Kane, that is what I meant, not that they wallow in their own filth. Little bits of food particles stuck to teeth can cause all sorts of problems. Get it checked by a doctor.
As an aside, Sniper...you did not suck the blood from the wound with your own mouth..did you? If the animal had any problems with bacteria or viruses, etc..then you just made another breach to your body by doing that. I am not going into the specifics for different pathogens require different pathways. It is never a good idea to suck on a wound. Animals do it because their saliva contains healing agents. Our saliva does no good to wounds and can actually cause harm.
Take the pet to a vet as soon as possible and see a doctor. I doubt you will have any problems, but with bites, you can never be too careful.

yeah I sucked the blood out with my mouth but I wasnt trying to heal anything, just making sure I didnt get blood on everything
I dont think its infected, its only a little bit red and it doesnt hurt when i touch it so I'll just take my chances on it. I dont care about infections much as long as I dont get cancer and grow a big thing out of my leg just like that rat

I'm moving this thread to Rants and Raves. It's not a bad thread, it's just kind of distasteful in a medical sort of way.

LOL! Thanks for the laugh, you just made my day.

Sorry Ion, I had to move it back ... doesn't exactly fit a "controversial" topic ... it's just the nature of the medical field...

True but blood sucking the rat bite is disgusting. Maybe I should start a thread about my inflamed bleeding hemorrhoids hanging out of my ass while we're at it.

I washed it first for at least 10 secs, does that make it less disgusting?

Yes, the true scary part though is its all true. Many famous people and models use that stuff as a wrinkle cream.
What some people will do for vanity.
