GTAIII installation problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Tommo245

Hello all,
I had a crappy version of GTAIII installed on my computer, so i got my friend's copy and just tried to install it.
When it auto runs, it goes through 'preparing to setup', but then constantly says "remove all components for this program?" I click yes, and it goes through the uninstall process.
GTAIII in the Add/Remove Programs list is still there though, and everytime i try to install, it comes up with "uninstall components?"
Could anyone help me with this problem?
Much appreciated.

You are using a bought version right?
Anyways...

Unistall GTA3 with add/remove.

Restart the comp.

Remove the GTA3 directory if still present.

Re-install GTA3, download & install the latest patch.

That doesn't work. I tried deleting GTA keys that i saw in another thread about this, but it still says there's more components. i can't find them.
I think i'll give up.

My Computer->Tools Menu->Folder Options->View Tab->Show hidden files & folders.

Look over G3 directory

List files found.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Look over G3 directory", but i clicked show hidden files and folders, and searched "G3" on the windows search thing. Nothing related to Grand Theft Auto 3 came up.
Am i doing something wrong?

Basic suggestion...

1. Delete the GTA 3 User Files folder.
My Computer->(User name folder)->My Documents->GTA3 folder. (including the .set file)

Advanced suggestions...
Warning! rededit.exe is for advanced users. Deleting the wrong keys can **** up your computer.

1. Removing add/remove entries...

Goto Run.
type regedit.exe
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall.

Remove the GTA3 key.

1. Remove the GTA3 keys.

Note: because I personally do not have GTA3, I can't provide you with the specific registry values.

Goto Run
type regedit.exe
Goto the Edit menu
Click on Find
Search for & delete any occurances of GTA3 or Grand Theft Auto3.

If the other suggestions fail...

4. Try a system restore to a point b4 GTA3 was installed.
Start---> Accessories---> System Tools---> System Restore

Will "system restore" delete all files i've put on my computer between the time i put on gta3 and now?

So I assume the other steps failed then?

One more suggestion before using system restore. Try the program Add/Remove 4 Good.

It removes files that the original add/remove can't.

System Restore changes many files and registry entries, and in some cases might replace more files than you want restored.

The simple answer yes & no.

Yes, because it will remove troublesome applications.
No, because you can always undo your restoration.

Personally I don't like using system restore, because sometimes it causes unexpected
errors. Furthermore, it should only be used as a last resort.

Try it, reinstall GTA3 + updated patch. If it doesn't work, you can always undo the restore.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Ok, so i recently noticed the GTAIII item has been removed from the Add/Remove programs list.
I really don't want to system restore, since i know nothing about computers and would hate to screw around with it.
Any more suggestions?

No need to do a system restore then.
