Computer gets stuck just before loading Windows 98 (SE).

Hey ho everyone, I have a problem.
Last night, my PC shut down perfectly normal, and everything worked great.
Today I woke up, turned it on... it starts loading, does autoexec.bat and the rest of the usual stuff.
Then, when it clears the DOS screen for a sec (you know, when the cursor moves to the upper left corner), it gets stuck there, and doesn't proceed to load the desktop.

I suspect it is a virus. When the screen gets stuck, the cursor keeps blinking. If I hit a key, and afterwards the Insert key, the cursor moves one line down.

Solutions I've tried: Scanning the computer for viruses in Safe Mode. Didn't find anything.
Running with Step by Step Confirmation. When loading the Windows drivers, I tried saying "No" to the ones which look to me suspicious. On certain cases, instead of getting stuck in that screen, it shows the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen. When I click a key, the PC restarts.

By the way - I have a P-III 733 MHZ Windows 98 SE computer. I have Norton Antivirus software (always runs in the background) and definition files are updated.

Solution, anyone?

My computer has done this a few times too, and I have Windows 98se.

It sounds simple, but have you just tried restarting, then booting back up in normal mode?

That has helped me, but if you have a birus or something, then I honestly can't help ya out much.

98se seems to like screwing up during boot-ups and shutdowns....

How annoying.

Tried that, many times. Same outcome.

mine does that from time to time, although just hitting the reset takes care of it. but since you can get into safe mode, thorough scandisk and defrag. if necessary, narrow down that troublesome driver more.
