Starcraft Battle.net Woes

Here's the deal. I have installed Starcraft: Brood War, however I am trying to play the original online. When I first tried to go on, it would ask me to upgrade the software, as it does sometimes. However, afterwords it would say that the upgrade was for a later version, and therefore could not be applied. When I would try to get back on, it would ask once more to upgrade, and the process would repeat.
Hoping to fix this problem, I downloaded the latest patch: v. 1.11, I believe. Since I installed the patch, when I try to get onto b.net the program crashes, completely shutting down. I can only get up to the point when the login box says "Accessing Account."
My question is: What's going wrong?

Sounds like the patch was not installed properly--something is corrupted. It happens. Just reinstall the game and reapply the patch.

Well, I re-installed the game as you recommended, and then I tried once more to go on Battle.net. This time when I downloaded the program upgrade, it went through without a hitch. However, when the program restarted and I tried to go on Battle.net it crashed again. So, I tried to reapply the patch. However, it said that my version was more advanced than the patch and therefore I would be unable to apply it.
Any idea what's going on?

It means the patch is already applied. No need to apply it again.

Yes, but it still crashes. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that.

If you still have the original starcraft cd, try connecting to Bnet with that instead.

Well, you sort of need the disk in order to play the game at all. I have to have the original CD in the drive at all times when I'm playing.
EDIT: Turns out my connection to the server had been changed in some way, preventing me from connecting. I ran regedit and fixed the problem. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

You only need the original cd to play the original version. You need the Brood War cd to play the expansion.
Glad you found a solution.
