MS Access Error - Used to Work!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey,

I started getting an error in MS Access 2002 the other day, and I am not sure what I have done. Whenever I load up access it opens and initializes fine. However, from the Task Pane that lets me select a blank database, existing database, etc.. whenever I try to open ANY database (new, existing, it doesn't matter) I get the following error message:

"Workgroup administrator couldn't create the workgroup information file. Make sure that you have specified a valid path and file name, that you have adequate permission to create the file, and that you have enough disk space on the destination drive. (-3100)"

I think click ok at the following message comes up:

"Microsoft Access couldn't find the file '*****.' This file is required for startup."

The ***** are five crazy characters that appear to be written chinese characters.

To address what the message says:
1. I am giving a valid path and file name
2. I believe I, as the administrator, have permission to create the file
3. I have adequate hard drive space (12 gigs free at the moment)

Other system information:
2.4 ghz AMD
1 gig ram
80 gig HD
GeForce4 4800 TX

I am not a network administrator or programmer, but I generally know my way around Windows XP fairly well, but this one has me licked. Given that I bought the software for a course I am taking on relational databases, this is rather integral to my ability to pass the course.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might try this link:

Sincy you mention networking, it may be relevant. Esentially, it says if you don't have a hardware problem, check your network accounts.

I also saw a couple of bugs fixed (theoretically) in SR1 and SR2. You might check for the latest patches. If you just bought it, chances are you need the patches anyway.
