Phantom Typing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Recently my Dell system at home has started "typing on it's own" It types words, but not structured sentences. (For example: the the the 80 man air)

I've run current anti-virus software and Spybot, checked all the settings our IT guy said to check, unplugged the keyboard, made sure there was no voice recognition software enabled, rebooted etc and it still does it. I've had it do it when responding to an email, searching store sites for products and even when I place my cursor in the box to enter my on-line banking information (scary !) Left alone, it will type line after line after line.....

Help !!!

does it do it when it's not connected to the internet?

I've only noticed it while on the internet (DSL line), but then I've only used Word one time since this started.

you have 3 options, in order of likelihood:
1. somehow, your microphone is connected and on at the same time a speech recognition program is running
2. you have a wireless keyboard, or are on a wireless network
3. malware of some kind

Since it happens when there is no sound at all in the room and I've already checked to make sure there is no speech recognition software enabled and it's not a wireless keyboard... can you tell me more about "malware"?

spyware, viruses, trojans, worms, etc.

I suggest starting up your computer, opening up word, and then disconnecting it from the internet, disconnect your keyboard, and disconnect your mic (if you can). Basically make it so that there is absolutly no possible way a person or device other than software can be causing this problem. Since they seem to be actual words and not random garble I don't think it is a keyboard issue (drivers or stuck buttons).

Wow this is an odd problem, have never seen one like this before! I wonder if your computer is trying to communicate with you? lol
