Starcraft crashes and freezes.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The game has been crashing very often. There's no errors that pops up when it crashes. It just crashes to the desktop. It also freezes sometimes, I usually know when its about to freeze when the music in the game gets all laggy.

Pentium 4 (2.1 Ghz)
Windows Xp Home Edition
128 MB ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card
512 MB Ram
RealTek AC97 Audio WDM
Have the lastest direct x driver, with the updated windows xp updates.

I've reinstalled the game, did a full system check, run a full system check on norton anti virus and it still crashes.

Any suggestions?

I went through the 8 steps from the support page, did everything that was asked and yet the problem still persists.

However in step 3: Download and install the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard, how do I find out what type of motherboard I have and where would I download the latest chip set for it.

It also tells me to change the desktop area and color depth to 640 X 460 with 256 colors, but my Ati Radeon 9200 goes as low as 800 X 600 with 16 BPP.

Download MVSoft PC. Post the specs.

Just set the resolution & color to your min settings. (800 X 600 with 16 Bit)

I used the MVsoft PC for for my system specs. The output for sound card is my Logitech
Microphone Pro 4000. How is that possible? Can i change it to RealTek AC97 Audio cuz thats the sound card I have.

I also used DXDiag to check my sound device and its set to RealTek AC97 Audio but for MVsoft its Logitech Microphone.

Look on the MVSoft PC under the motherboard category. It will tell you what brand your motherboard is.

Post your motherboard info so I can point you in the right direction.

Motherbord: Intel I865PE-6A79ZG09C-00 (Socket 478)

So you have an Intel.

Goto Intel
If you need more help, goto the "Identify Your Product" Box.

Update your Radeon 9200 vid card by going here.

I have the Intel 865 Chip Set Family

Memory Controller: 82 865G/P/PE
I/O Controller: 82 801 EB/ER

The Intel 865 Chip Set has 3 pieces:
- Intel® Desktop Board D865PESO, Intel® Desktop Board D865PERL,Intel® Desktop Board D865PERC

Out of those 3 which 1 should I download? Ive downloaded the desktop chip set since its an 865 PE, thats one listed above.

All are pretty much the same...

Differences...

PESO: Smallest dimmensions(9.60" x 9.60"), micro-ATX board, supports 1x & 4x & 8x AGP cards or an ADD card, Three PCI bus add-in card connectors .

PERC: Medium dimmensions(11.60" x 9.60"), ATX board, supports 1x & 4x & 8x AGP cards or an ADD card, Six PCI bus add-in card connectors.

PERL: Large dimmensions(12.00" x 9.60"), ATX board, supports 4x & 8x AGP cards, Five PCI bus add-in card connectors.

So which would you prefer I download ?

Posted by: C-Money

You'll need to desktop identify the chipset inside your computer. It will look like PESO, PERC or PERL.

Then download the matching chipset.

Posted by: PureLucid

Ok, I Just opened my hardrive and find it to be the PERL Chipset. But the latest updates for Perl is back a year ago 2003, since i bought this computer not so long ago I'm sure I woudn't need to get the updates for 2003, unless it has the 2004 updates which I dont see on the Intel website.
Well thanks for your time, I appreciate it.

Well if you bought it after the driver updates, your computer should have them.

Is your vid card driver updated?

Changing the Resolution/Color.

Rt. click on Starcraft.exe
Properties
Compatbility Tab
Display settings box
Select run ain 256 colors, run in 640x480.

Change the Compatability.

Rt. Click on Starcraft.exe
Properties
Compatability Tab
Compatability Mode box.
Start with Win95 & work your way up to Win2000.

Yes, apparently they have a new version of Catalyst that came out couple weeks ago, and a new version of RealTek AC97. I've updated the 2 drivers from the main websites.

Ok im changing the Resolution/Color and the campatability mode, hopefully this and the updated drivers should help to resolve the crashing problem, I'll Keep you updated.

Thank You.

Im unable to set the compatibility mode for Windows 95 / 98 / ME/ NT.

The data file error pops up, saying Starcraft is unable to read a required file.

Windows 2000 works fine though.

Posted by: C-Money

Now that it works on Win2000, you can start increasing the resolution/color back up to normal.

Glad you found a solution.
