Computer Freezing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok here is my problem and what I have done to try and fix it so far. About a week ago my computer starting freezing, forcing me to restart everytime it did. Whenever its about to freeze I will here a little beep (its not so much a beep, more like a little squeak). After I hear that beep I will still be able to move the mouse cursor and whatever windows are open around for a few seconds more and then everything freezes and I have to restart. I had this problem about a year ago, only then it would freeze when I was playing games, and I dusted out my computer which at the time solved the problem. So I tried dusting out my computer again, even though it wasn't that bad, but afterwards it still would freeze. After a few more feezes and a few more restarts it then would not load up windows anymore. It would go to the loading windows screen and then restart itself again. So I formated it and reinstalled windows. It is still freezing .....but now I am noticing it only freezes when I run like 5 or so things at one time or try and watch a video file. So now I am starting to think maybe for some reason my cpu is overheating too easily or that maybe there is something wrong with my hard drive. If anyone has any ideas what the problem could be I would be greatful for their input. If anymore info is needed just ask and I will gladly reply.

If this the freezing/crashing happens once in a while that can be considered normal.

If it freezes/crashes several times a day, then it probably is a overheating problem.

Check the computers temp.

Also post your systems specs.

It is definitly not normal over heating. I could leave the computer off for hours then turn it on and go straight to a video file and it would freeze. Something else thats kind of strange is I can few videos through the file sharing system I use, Ares, without my computer freezing but If I try and use windows media player or divx it will freeze after a few seconds.

Computers specs are:
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 533MHz processor
Radeon 9700 pro video card
512 MB DDR RAM (PC 3200)
Soyo SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite motherboard
80 GB Maxtor harddrive

There is nothing in there right now that hasn't been in there when everything was working fine.

Update your vid card driver.

With some programs you need to run Ares/Divx in order to play those files.

Well I have found the problem. It was the hard drive. I replaced the hard drive with a spare that I had, did everything that would freeze it befor such as playing large video files or leaving it on for more then an hour, and it did not freeze once. I then plugged in the old hard drive as a secondary hard drive and the freezing began again. I unplugged the old hard drive and the freezing has stopped once again. Now I just hope my old hard drive is still under warranty. Hope this helps anyone with similar problems.
