Bad PS2 port?

Hey everyone,
I was wondering how often PS2 ports can go bad? I have a computer that has been in use for awhile. Had a USB mouse for a while and has had a PS2 mouse for awhile. Anyway, as of late I cannot use a PS2 mouse. PS2 keyboard works fine but mouse just isn't there. Windows won't recognize it at all. There is nothing in the Device Manager about mice anywhere. Also, just to see if it was a windows problem I booted up KNOPPIX (linux) and it couldn't find a mouse either. Same with FEDORA CORE 2. This tells me that it definitely isn't a driver problem. If it's a dead PS2 port what are my options? Should I just get a new motherboard or would a PS2 PCI card be the smarter choice?
Thanks

yes, they do go bad fairly routinely. the smart choice would be a usb mouse, most mice and keyboards are usb anyway.
forget the pci card, might as well get the mouse and be done with it. a new motherboard would be appropriate if youre planning to upgrade at this time anyway.

ps2 port going bad??? hmm... never happened to me. ive had an old pc for at least 5 years and the ps2 ports never went bad in my pc history. the only thing about the mouse that went bad for me was the mouse itself.

check also that windows didnt tell you bios to disable the mous ps/2 port... sounds kinda obvious and strange, but i know windows has in the past done soem weird crap to my bios, and sice you put a usb mouse it may of told your bios it didnt need the resource used for the port and disabled it...
justa hunch, I'm sure your capable of know whether the port is gone or not, personally i;ve never had this problem... usually I wear out the crumby mouse before that happens or get a new comp...

I actually never thought about checking the BIOS. I didn't think that Windows could even change those settings. I guess it would be possible though. I don't have the computer here at the moment (its at the office and I'm relaxing at home). First thing on Monday though, I'll give that a try. That would be great if it was just a simple setting in the BIOS.
If not though, I guess I will have to go with a USB mouse. I know that USB mice didn't work during the install of older OS's but Windows XP and recent versions of Linux support this, so I guess this isn't a real big deal. Just a strange occurance. I've never had a PS/2 port go bad before.
I'll let you know what I find out.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried testing the PS2 mouse on another computer?

Yeah, I actually tried two different mice that were both in use on other computers. I'm certain that something is messed up with the port itself, whether its a BIOS setting or a power surge or what, I'm not sure.

you wouldnt think it would be able to change the bios, but isnt this where your system time is stored?
I know I had a similar problem with an old 9-pin mouse. Maybe just someone disabled it without me knowing when thy put the ps/2 mouse in?
ohwell its just a hunch, and i'm probably wrong.
