Hey
This site will give you the exact info about my problem
http://www.bustrace.com/products/delayedwrite.htm
my external case is Exsys 9030, I cannot find info about which chipset it uses so its kinda hard for me to use all the info on the above mentioned site.
some additional info
Dell Inspiron 8500
2.4Ghz P4m
512 MB Ram
Gforce 4200TI GO 64MBRam
Win Xp Home SP1 (with all recent updates)
Ive got 2 external disks, 1 WD250Gb usb2/firewire and one self made (Exsys case and wd200Gb disk) also usb2/firewire.
When I got the Exsys and tried to attach ot to usb2 it made my trust usb2 hub shutdown even woth the power supply connected to both hib and drive, so I decided to run both on Firewire which worked fine till yesterday when I reinstalled xp, they r connected to firewire with 1 drive connected to my laptop and the other ones to each other.. This used to work fine, but now I get delayed write error when I try to use the Exsys one, the western digital disk works perfect. I have to unplug the power supply to get it back n running. The cable is a 6pin )wich goes into the disk and a 4 pin in the other end (laptop) between disks its 6 pin in both ends.
this is really annoying me now coz Ive only got an 30Gb internal drive in the laptop so Ive installed some games on the external disk and its not very reliable to play when the disks behave like that.. Also I do alot of video editing and its not fun risking loosing a file I am working on coz the disk suddenly disconnects...
I have been trying to figure out which chipset Exsys r using so that I could find a firmware upgrade but their louse crap site doesnt inform of such detailed information.
here is a link to Exsys site: http://www.exsys.ch/english/ex_9030/ex_9030.html

1. never play a game or run a program from an external disk. In my opinion, the external drives are used to store data.\
2. ive never heard of exsys. i think its that second external harddrive thats causing the problems. so try this. diconnect the second one and use the first one only, i dont think your usb port is the problem as you said that you had a problem with it when you connect the second external harddrive to it. if this was not useful to you, please let me know.

thanx for quick reply
I have tried with the exsys alone and together with wd, wd works in both cases but exsys doesnt. I have now managed to find out that the chipset is a Prolific 3507B, I have also managed to find out that the usb2 port on exsys is faulty, so that solves usb2. anyways I have now managed to upgrade the firmware... with some extremely fine adjustments to the usb2 port I was able to get it to work from there (since firmware only can be updated through usb) I havent been able to test it yet. I will do that now. will reply with an status report after I have tested it.
As to installing games on external drive...
Since I am on a laptop and my internal drive is only 30Gb 4200RPM that will affect game performance, and I needed more space alot more so I decided to comprimice, instead of buying an expensive 2.5" disk with a max capacity of 100Gb and max 5200RPM (wich is too slow for games anyways) I bought this one 200Gb for over 120$ less than a 2.5" 100Gb.

Problem seems to be solved after the Firmware upgrade, I am now going to get the case replaced with a new one... warranty issue because of the faulty usb2 port and now I know what the first thing I will do with the new case is... Firmware upgrade.

Seems like I was ahead of myself...
Its not workin... The fault must be @ microsoft windows xp upgrades...dont know which.. but I will anyways go get the case replaced...

and its not expensive to get a 2.5 slim hard drive for a notebook. my notebook is not even a year old yet and its really fast. it has a 40 gb harddrive thats 7200 rpm.but anyways, its not a bad idea to play games from an external harddrive. but going through all that trouble with the exsys, just replace it with another external harddrive thats not an internal enclosed.
