Help...Odd computer lock-ups

Hey all, I'm new to the forums. Registered here because it looked like I might finally be able to talk to some people who know what they are talking about, rather than some of the idiots that work for some of these brand-name computer support hotlines.

Anyway, I just bought a new HP PC in january, that I purchased for the purpose of video and graphics work. However, A month or two ago I was forced to put a new power supply in after I noticed that I had a 250W one that was no where near enough to power the original PC and the few pieces of hardware i had put in since. Anyway, while I had the PC open, i also installed a new Sound Blaster Audigy because i really didn't like the motherboard integrated sound (which required powered speakers to function)

Since that day, I have been getting about one lock-up a week, where the entire system will just freeze, and the mouse and keyboard yield no response (The system clock even stops displaying update time). So, I am forced to power off and restart manually. The lock-up will occur during tasks ranging from web browsing, to instant messenging, to even no task at all (just the desktop is displayed)

So, I got extremely annoyed with this and reformatted the hard drive, and installed Win XP Pro again. This did not solve the problem, because within two weeks of the reformat it started locking-up again.

Here are my exact specs...

HP a450e PC
w/
- Win XP Pro
- AMD Athlon 64 3200+
- Asus Mother board
- 1024 MB of PC3200 DDR RAM
- 1 Seagate 120 GB 7200 RPM HD
- 1 Western Digital 80 GB 7200 RPM HD
- 1 HP CD-Writer
- 1 Samsung DVD-Rom drive
- ATI Radeon 9800 PRO graphics w/ dual monitors
- Creative Soundblaster Audigy 5.1 sound card [new]
- Antec 430 W PSU [new] the former was a 250W made by some company called Hippo
- Nvidia mother board-integrated ethernet

Can anyone help me?

well, the occasional lock up is not abnormal, and probably more trouble than its worth to try to fix. once a week would fall into that category. if youre getting up to once a day or 2, then its time to attempt to track it down.

first, make sure windows, bios, firmware, and all drivers are updated. if the sound card is sharing an irq with something significant, move it to another slot. if you have not already done so, remove all sound drivers from the device manager, reboot and make sure the onboard sound is disabled in the bios, and finish booting. xp should then detect the audigy and install drivers for it. you may update them with later versions at any time.

also, hp installs their own software. if you used restore disks, that was replaced and could be the source of the problem as well.
