I have been having problems with my internet. I am currently using broadband. I can't connect to any websites, but i can use aol instant messanger and Halo. I think that i can't connect to websites because to many ports are being used but I am unsure about this and do not know how to fix the problem if it is from this.

First goto Run and type Cmd and hit enter to get to the command prompt. Type ping 127.0.0.1 to see if your network adapter will respond. This should help determine the status of your tcp/ip stack. Then try ipconfig/all and check the results there. Also try route print and see if you have an entry 0.0.0.0 with an IP address corresponding to your network adapte address from the ipconfig/all and your router/gateway address will show too. Try to ping your network adapter to see if you get a response. Try to ping your gateway address. Also try nslookup to check the status of the DNS server you are using. I'm assuming you are using the DHCP off of your router and not running a server yourself.

This is only a starting point as more info is needed.

I’m helping with problem. I’m don’t live close and can’t
look at the computer until Sat. The cable co had him run a test.
The computer was sending single to websites and receiving a
reply. When he tries to connect to a web site he gets the error you get
when you are not connected to the Internet “The page cannot be displayed”.
He removed Halo from computer, didn’t help, reinstalled Halo. Now
Halo can’t access the Interned, Bur AOL IM works fine.

The problem appears to be a viruses or spyware.
The error message is not an error message at all.
It is a web page that has been made to look look
an error message.

1. Download & Run AVG
It will clear your system of viruses.

2. Download Adaware & Spybot
Spyware may have changed your registry values. These will eliminate spyware.

ok I did the first step ping 127.0.0.1 responded with 4 packets sent 4 packets received 0 lost.
2nd. I did the ipconfig/all and there seemed to be a lot of info I don't understand. It seemed to me that the relevant info was that NetBios over Tcpip was disabled IP Routing Enabeld: No WINS Proxy Enabled: No I thought these might be the problem but that's about as far as I got. I wasn't sure how to ping those other areas. Should I just re-install XP?

as well there is nothing listed next to my gateway address.

ok guys this is that lost guy again. I just smacked everything valuable on my external harddrive and reinstalled xp. That, of course, solved the problem although it was time consuming. thanks for your other advise. I tried all of it but just got fed up and reinstalled.
