Intel released the 2Ghz Pentium 4 today, and the reviews have came pouring in: Acid Hardware, Anandtech, Computer Source Magazine, CPU Review, ExtremeTech, FiringSquad, HardOCP, Hardware Unlimited, Hot Hardware, Overclocker's Online, Tech-Report, Tom's Hardware, SimHQ. Whew...
Besides the increase in clock speed, the 2 GHz processor will be released in both Socket 423 and Socket 428 form. Intel plans to slowly phase the older 423 socket out, much like the transition from the Slot 1 to Socket 370. Here's a snip from AnandTech's review:
At 2GHz the Pentium 4 is even more competitive with the Athlon than it has ever been before. If it weren’t for such a large price discrepancy between the two processors then the recommendation would be a tough one to make but for now the price to performance ratio of the Athlon continues to be superior to the Pentium 4. If price isn’t a concern, then it’s worth noting there are some situations in which the Pentium 4 2.0GHz is noticeably more than what AMD’s current flagship can offer. What you really must take away from this review is that the potential for the Pentium 4’s future is becoming more and more visible as the processor matures.
This chip will also be the last P4 based on the Willamette core. Intel's chips from now on will be constructed on the Northwood core.

The best thing about the 2Ghz P4 release is it will prompt AMD to release the new 1.5Ghz Palamino core Athlons.
I would rather have better overall system performance, than a handful of high bandwidth applications that run faster on a P4. And the price of even the fastest Athlon is way cheaper. 120$ for a 1.4Ghz processer last I checked.

Actually they just cut prices again. I just checked and now it's down to 107$..hehe

Lol, guess Intel hated being beat to the 1Ghz mark by AMD. It is a shame though that they have to pump out such a high GHz CPU to remain competitive with AMD. However, this is good news for all. Keep those Ghz upwards and onwards! This benefits the consumer the most.
