Crash after Patch/Direct 3d not work

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Game Crashes After Installing Latest 1.09 Patch

Game works fine under Diablo 1.00
Computer specs are as following:
AMD K7 1000
256 RAM
ELSA GLADIAC GEFORCE2MX
30 GB HD
Sound Blaster 16

After installing patch, my computer freezes. After restart for comp, diablo 2 icon does not work. I click on the Diablo 2 icon and my comp just freezes again. I have attempted to reinstall the game but am still unsuccessful in solving the problem. I got the patch from the blizzard site. Just to check if it was the patch problem, I decided to download the patch from fileplanet...same problem. Have latest patches for computer and direct 8.0x from Max Payne video game.

Game does not work under Direct 3d.

Listed above are my computer stats. I believe my comp is by far capable on handling Direct 3d. However, the computer exits back to windows after the cinematic entrance of Diablo 2.

Thank you beforehand to anyone offering a hand in helping me solve the two problems.

Try updating your chipset drivers. Not sure which one you have but you probably have a VIA southbridge controller. Install the latest VIA IDE driver update. The VIA 4 in 1 driver should install it for you and ignore the AGP update unless you have a VIA Northbridge controller. If you have an AMD Northbridge controller, get the latest AGP miniport driver from www.amd.com

You can get the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers from www.viatech.com

A lot of people having trouble with older VIA 4 in 1's are having success with the new 4.32 VIA drivers. Also, a BIOS update for your motherboard may be necessary as well.

Post back if you need more help. Also, tell us what motherboard you have.

btw..If you're still locking up in D3D, try disabling the soub blaster 16 and see if that helps. It's an older card so it may be the problem.

I have installed the latest VIA 4 in 1. My motherboard's manufacturer is ABIT but I am not sure about the model.
These are the following controllers under my SCSI controllers in system from control panel:
HPT RCM DEVICE
HPT370 UDMA/ATA100 RAID CONTROLLER

I accidentally installed the VIA CPU to AGP controller from the 4 in 1 patch, should i remove it from device manager in system properties?

I have the latest AMD AGP miniport driver for Windows ME.

On other note, Disabled Soundblaster 16 and attempted to run direct3d, same problem.

Thanx for responding, appreciate it greatly.

Abit never made a motherboard with an AMD Nortbridge controller. So the VIA 4 in 1 is all you needed. Leave all the VIA stuff in.

As for which motherboard you got, check your manual or ask the person from who you baught the board from. A list of the Abit Athlon motherboards are on this page. Check for a BIOS update once you know which board you have.

While you're at the Abit site, grab the latest drivers for your Highpoint RAID controller.

In your BIOS settings, make sure Read around write is disabled for your video card. Also, disable video BIOS caching and shadowing. It does nothing for performance anyways.

btw..Do you have the latest NVidia Detonator driver? What about DirectX8? Post back and keep us informed.

Oh, if it's just the 1.09 patch that's causing all your problems, try setting your CD-ROM to either Master or Slave. Whichever it's not on now. If you have your CD-ROM on the highpoint controller, you might try running it on the VIA IDE controller and see if that helps.

I don't want to sound like a numbnut but how do I adjust the slave and master setting for my cd-rom drive? and that IDE stuff? thanx again.

Posted by: P@wNZ

I have the latest directx8a from the game Max Payne.

Where can I find the latest Nvidia Detonator driver? I tried www.nvidia.com but it seems to be down. I also tried my distributer at www.elsa.com . My comp doesn't seem to load the whole page and only loads the title bar. ANyways, thanx again

Try these URLs:

http://www.icrontic.com/index.php?p...loads#detonator
http://www.guru3d.com/download/nvidia.shtml

The ones to look for are "official" and "WHQL" drivers...

On the back of your CD-ROM drive, you should notice a jumper covering 2 pins with a toal of 6 pins. Labeled above the pins should be MA, SL, and CS.

M or MA is master, S or SL is slave, and CS is for cable select. To change a drive to either master or slave, just move the jumper over the corrisponding pins. Which should be marked on the CD-ROM.

Note however that if you have more than one device on a chain, you'll have to configure the other device. There can only be one master and one slave on a chain. So if you change the CD-ROM to either master or slave, the other drive will need to be changed on the chain.

Also note that this applies to your secondary IDE controller. The Primary should be left alone unless your CD-ROM is the slave to your boot hard drive. In which case moving the CD-ROM to the secondary controller as master may help.

If all this info seems confusing, try this website out to learn more. If that seems complicated, (Which it can be) I would recommend you have a friend help you out that is good with hardware. A tech may also be able to help you but that can get expensive to just get a game to run. And this might not be the solution. I only know some users have had success trying this.

after doing the adjustment to the cd-rom, the game still does install the patch properly.

I, however have solved the direct 3d problem and now run fine thanx to the post about the newest detonator patch. I had the newest patch from the elsa webpage but I guess that wasn't cutting it. Once I downloaded 12.90 from the guru3d site you provided for me, it works perfectly.

Thank you to all those that are so considerate in giving me a helping hand. I emailed the blizzard official techs and they have not responded to my messages for the 2nd week now.

Glad you got it working.

i've been searching trying to find what could possibly be the problem why my diablo will not run under 1.09 version. I was wondering if the following could be the problem:

I go open my computer,
go to properties,
go under performace tab
and under pc cards (PCMCIA) it says no PC Card sockets are installed.
also under disk compression it says not installed

Could that be causing the problem?

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

I thought you got it working.

As far as PCMCIA cards, those are for laptops and don't apply to you. Disk compression is also something you don't need unless your hard drive is running out of space.

So exactly how won't the game work? You said it works in Direct3D now, so where is it crashing? Do you get error messages?

Posted by: P@wNZ

Oh, i'm sorry for confusing you...

I got the game to work in direct 3d under version 1.00 when I downloaded the nvidia detonator driver you supplied me with(thanx again).

However, the original problem with the game crashing after installing the 1.09 patch still exists. I tried the Cd-rom thingy but did not succeed in fixing the problem.

As a result, I have just been playing in single player under version 1.00 . I really am eager to get back to my battlenet account cause I heard characters get deleted if not used for 2 months or so.

Posted by: P@wNZ

Oh, and I found out my motherboard is ABIT KT7A

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Ok do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard? Check my link to the Abit site.

Also I noticed you got it working in 1.00 with the new Detonator 12.9 driver. Try out the 14.1 WHQL driver from the Guru3d link in the earlier post. It could be that driver is needed to work with the latest patch. I currently been using the 14.1 with no problems. Give that a try and post back.

Posted by: P@wNZ

thanx for all the help. It worked after I downloaded the latest BIOS, and did the slave thingy for the CD-ROM!!!! I think its admirable that you were patient with me throughout the process. Perhaps I'll see you on Battlenet sometime on USWEST.

should i download the latest ABIT motherboard driver also? I haven't got to that and dunno if that will do anything. I checked into it and they don't have windows ME; they only have win 9x and 2000.

You guys are great, not even blizzard themselves were able to find a solution for my problem.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

We're glad you got your problem solved ... then again, with Ion Silverbolt helping you out, you were already in good hands

Posted by: P@wNZ

sure was

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Glad you got it working.

As for the Abit driver. Not sure what driver you mean but there is a famous saying and it definately applies to computers. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

If it ever acts up again though, you know where to find us.
