Windows Media Player - Internal Application Error
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: King_Henrik
Hi,
I'm really in desperate need of some help with an error with my Windows Media Player.
Every time i try to open the media player i'm hit with a message saying 'An Internal Application Error has Occured'. I seem to have tried everything to solve the problem, including re-downloading WMP and visiting the Microsoft website for help but still nothing is working.
I'm convinced that its a problem with my registry database. Can anyone help me out here?
By the way i'm using Windows Millenium if thats any help.

An internal application error has occurred.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if one or more of the Jscript registry key settings are incorrect. This behavior may also occur if the Jscript.dll file is missing or damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.
Method 1: Reregister Jscript.dll and Vbscript.dll
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK.
3. Click OK.
4. Click Start, and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and then click OK.
6. Click OK.
If either of the files do not register as expected, or if you receive an error message, the system file may be missing or damaged. To extract the missing file in Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. Click Expand File.
4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore.
5. In the Restore from box, type the path of the Windows XP .cab file where you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.
Note The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD.
6. In the Save file in box, type the path where you want to extract the new file, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.
7. Click Expand.
8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
Open a dialog box that previously experienced the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. If the issue recurs, go to the next method.
Method 2: Edit the registry
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c260-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558}\In procServer32
The (Default) value data should contain the following value:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JSCRIPT.DLL
If it does not, double-click Default, type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JSCRIPT.DLL in the Value data box, and then click OK.
4. The ThreadingModel value data should contain the following value:
Both
If it does not, double-click ThreadingModel, and then type Both in the Value data box.
5. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c261-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558}\In procServer32
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to edit this key, and then go to step 7.
7. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c262-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558}\In procServer32
8. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to edit this key, and then go to step 9.
9. Exit Registry Editor.

A very easy way, would be to skip the crappy Win. Media player!
Download the latest Winamp instead. It can do all the things Win. mediaplayer does. But a lot better.
And if you want even better sound quality? Download the plug in "Enhancer 017". It's free.
Microsoft, wants money for most of their plugins.

Hello
I like winamp, i have that winamp modern theme, thats brilliant, although i don't use winamp that much, but i have it on my computer, i don't like windows media player that much, my friend says that it is not any good for cds when it comes to automatically get cd info off the web, Real player does it better, realplayer knows all his cds, i like realplayer as well, i used to pay 10 pound a month for the Pro version, did not see advantage except for one or 2 realpass videos. The one i like to play videos on is Divx, i think that is brilliant, it supports my 4 channel speakers, not like windows media player, it just puts sound through front and not through rear, even though it is only stereo, but real player and Divx put the stereo image through the front and rear, not sure what winamp does, not tried it for that, winamp does not play some of my videos, the sound comes through, no picture.
Regards
Andrew

I too have this problem plus a number of other Windows ills such as Help and Support not launching, System Information not launching and others listed in the MS Bulletin, 831430. However, the numbers in brackets in the registry key are different than those listed here. The numbers all end in 558 as in {f414c261-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558} whereas in my registry, they all end in 58. In the MS bulletin, the first key shows 58 and the other two show 558. Could this be my problem and how would I fix it?

Try a registry repair software, like Registry Mechanic. It may help. But be aware, that this is only a trial, so you ill have to scan, repair 15, scan again etc. There are no registry repair freeware, that are any good unfortunatly.
Othervice it is a repair installation or an reinstall of Windows, you are looking at.
Posted by: shakermaker
I installed Registry Mechanic and ran it. It didn't fix my problems directly, but it did allow me to run FixWinXPHelp which fixed Help and Support and System Information. Previously, FixWinXPHelp could not execute because of a library that wasn't registered. I guess that Registry Mechanic corrected the library registration problem. Windows MediaPlayer still doesn't work, but at least I'm getting some of my problems solved. Thank you very much for the assistance.

I have a suggestion, that maybe is a kind of "Lazy mans soloution". Why not try Winamp instead? It sounds a lot better than Win Media PL. Especially if you install the plugin "Enhancer 017".

I just realized that I have problems other than being able to use MediaPlayer. I basically have not been able to view embedded video in either Internet Explorer or in Firefox. QuickTime files will play, but WMP files will not play. I also seem not to have any problem viewing Real files. I would like to view movie trailers especially, but haven't been able to for awhile. I usually go to Internet Movie Database (IMDB) to view the trailers. The VideoDetective just sits there checking and never plays the video. I also sometimes get the error message "Cannot create DirectShow Player". I assumed that this would be related to the other problems that I have had, but since I have now fixed Help and Support and am now able to launch System Information, I still have no luck with most embedded video. I configured RealPlayer as the default player for all media and that didn't change anything.

Try a repair installation of Windows.
Just uninstall your video card driver, if you have'nt got an WHQL sertified driver. This to avoid trouble, during the repair.
This way, you will have a fresh Windows installed, without having to reinstall your other stuff.
The only things you will have to reinstall, is Service pack 2 and additional Windows updates + maybe videocard driver.
Here is an instruction how to repair Windows:

I have done a repair of XP. WMP no longer gives me the error msg, and after telling me to reinstall WMP and initially failing to install, WMP now works. I'm not sure why, but I'm grateful. Thanks for all your help.

Pity!
Sorry, that I whas'nt able to help you all the way.
But you can, as I said before, always use Winamp instead.

I also have the Internal Application error message, however, I get the message when the XP operating system loads the desktop. I can click on the OK and it goes way, and the windows media player seems to work fine. I am concerned that I am missing something here, and there really is a problem other than an annoying message, although I would like to get rid of the message.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you

try running windows script 5.6 for 2000 and XP
Posted by: rastaman
Snagged this from PC Answers
This problem is also associated with blank windows appearing in certain dialogs such as the Search Companion, User Accounts Control Panel and Windows Update. In your case, re-registering a DLL should fix the problem. To do this, click Start -> Run, type regsvr32 jscript.dll and click OK. Now click Start -> Run again, but this time type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and click OK.
If you run into problems – for example, you’re told the files in question are missing or damaged, read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article here for more troubleshooting instructions. . . . worked for me . . . good luck!

here is a copy paste on what I did to fix my problem when some accounts could not reregister jscript and vbscript (error 0x8000400), thanks for the help on this forum, and what I say at the bottom of this applies here as well, without this help I would have been reinstalling windoze all next week
Quote:
for those of you with this problem, and the above fix only works on some user accounts on the PC:
-go into the user account that it works on (the that regsrv32 jscript.dll and regsvr32 vbscript.dll doesnt return error 0x8000400)
-open regedit (start/run type regedit <enter>)
-locate this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\
-right click on it and select permissions
-add one of the other users to the permissions
-click on advanced and select "replace permissions on all child ... "
-press OK and it will propagate proper permissions to all keys under classes
-now you can go to the other user accounts and fix it with regsvr commands above.
seems something while installing/uninstalling corrupts the registry entries, and windows restores them only for the user that does the install/uninstall... so if you are gettting the "unspecified error" when trying to reregister those DLL's to fix WMP, try all the users to find out which one is still working and follow my fix...
this is also a known bug when using widgets with Windowblinds, corrupting those registry keys on every boot.
hope this helps someone, thanks for the origional info in the thread, helped me narrow my problem alot and find the above fix!

gimme 5 man!
WMP sucks. Winamp is a personal fav of mine for older systems. But for higher-end systems, i use iTunes.
btw, the linux modification of winamp (called xmms) is also cool and runs perfectly on a 486-DX4.
still WMP sucks sh**.

___________________________________________________________________________
it accors to me that since so many peopple are having this problem the error is either caused by adware, spyware or a virus from the internet or it is caused by a malfunction in the windows coding or wmp coding that relates to the date and time settings if this is the milenium bug then it is a bit late but shure does drive me potty
___________________________________________________________________________
i have noticed that in my wmp dir the skins folder is the only folder there that has files in it and i am shure there should be files in the other folders
the files in the skin folder will load up the skin for the wmpgui but with no functinality

Could not get it to work for me
Posted by: Conorooney
I did Method 2 to no avail! I tried Method 1 but when I did the: "regsvr32 jscript.dll" it said:
LoadLibrary("jscript.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.
When I did the: "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" it said: "DllRegisterServer in vbscript succeeded" so i'm assuming thats correct!
I don't understand Method 1 where it says:
What exactly is the file I want to restore??
What, in the restore box, is the path of the Windows XP .cab file??
In the Save file, what is the path where I want to extract the new file or where is the folder?!?!??!
Cheers! I really need this to work! Thanks again!
