Windows Media Player 9

Hello all,
I guess this issue repeats iteself from time to time..... However - I am trying to open a media file by double clicking it. The media player is WMP 9. Once the WMP9 is being opened after the media file was double clicked - it is blank, & after few seconds I loose the mouse, the whole compjuter is stucked. If I wait few more seconds - the screen loose its picture & turns into a blank screen, & nothing could be done, except a HW reset.
I was told that this is a classical codecs problem. Well - this problem just came up today, I have no idea where from - before I have ran zillions of media files with no problem. Second - I have tried installing few codec packs: Nimo, K-lite, the original "WM9Codecs.exe" from micro$hit downloads - nothing helped. Still the same problem of pc get stucked.
Anyone - ? Help ?!?!?
