xp hangs at windows xp screen

Hi,
Here's my situation: I turn my pc on. I have an hp. It was working fine until today. For some reason, it takes a long time at the windows xp screen---you know, where the bar scrolls back and forth. It takes about 2 minutes. Then, it spends a few seconds on the black screen and finally I see the welcome message and everthing begins to load. I ran norton antivirus and apparently there is no virus. I ran the adaware software I have. I have the zonealarm firewall. I don't know what's happenning.
Another weird thing that happenned today had to do with office 97. I opened up Excel and then I wanted to insert something on the spreadsheet. Only a few of the insert options were appearing. Eventually, I got the window that says that excel encountered some error and has to close down. That window asks if I want to send an error message. I then opened word up and tried to edit. I again noticed that all the options were appearing and I got the same error window. What I ended up doing was uninstalling office 97 and reinstalling it. After I reinstalled it, the office 97 applications seem to be working properly again.
I still, however, have the startup issue I described. Do you think these issues are related? Help, please.

When loading up, make sure that you don't have any CDs/diskettes in the drives. Some games cause the OS to read them at startup, causing slowdown.
Try running checkdisk and diskdefragmenter. They usually tighten up performance, espically on startup.
Cheers!

Try "Last known good configuration"
1. Restart the computer.
2. While the PC is booting, hit the F5 key repeatedly. It will bring you to a windows option screen.
3. Choose last known good configuration.
