Temporarily Disabling Automatic SP2 Update

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Microsoft plans to release Service Pack 2 for XP to users via Windows Update on August 16. If you have automatic updates enabled and would prefer not to update to SP2 yet, Microsoft has provided a toolkit with several ways to prevent the update to SP2. The toolkit is aimed toward network administrators, but does contain an executable that will allow single users to disable the update.

Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 will be available for a period of 120 days (4 months) from August 16. At the end of this period, Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems.

The tools add the key "DoNotAllowXPSP2" (set to 1 for enable) to "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" in the registry, so this may be done manually with the registry editor.

Isnt it easier to just turn off automatic updates?

because the purpose is only to stop the update to SP2, instead of stopping ALL possible critical updates that can potentially fix problems that may not be related to SP2...

But all the critical updates coming in the next few months are gonna be for SP2...

not all, unless you know someone inside Microsoft who can say otherwise

Bill Gates is my neighbor!

There maybe a FEW for non-SP2 but I would say 99% of them will be SP2. Only a fool would get it when it comes out anyways though.

Hi, I hope somebody can explain to me why you are talking about temporarily disabling the SP2 Update? It's supposed to improve the protection on Windows Operating System, it not better to update? I was planning to update but want to know if there's some reason why this shouldn't be done or if I need to wait few months before update.

I don't know plenty about this, but I think is better to ask than to keep doubts in mind.

Thx in advance for the response

Primarily because nobody knows what new bugs/incompatabilities can be introduced with this service pack. Notice how after almost every new update there has to be some patch or fix to a bug.

Personally I don't think it matters enough to not download it but I'd wait a day or two to download it.

Don't forget new security holes, also.

I put on SP2 Beta on my laptop 3 weeks ago and windows crashed rendering it useless. Luckily I brought a copy of our dealer lisenced XP disc to India to reinstall our pc.
