I'm so glad you came to us!

I'd like to know a little more about the pop-ups you're seeing.

What's the name of the site that opens up the pop-up window? You should be able to see it for a moment in the uppermost left hand corner of the window. This is where all of the page activity is displayed and will show you which site is directing you to the final pop-up that you see.

Also, have you tried "HijackThis"? It's a usefull program that will scan your system and give you a peek at what's going on in the innards. When things are discovered that you don't want you can use the program to remove them.

Let me know and we'll go from there. It sounds like you just have some marketing adware on your computer which is deffinitly annoying but usually not dangerous; we want to know for sure though. Once we do know what we're dealing with it'll be easier to take care of the problem.

Oh man, all that work for nothin'. Shucks.....

What was your solution? Please post it here so that we can all learn together.

Thank you!

Pop-ups when you don't have an internet browser open are caused by adware programs like those that come bundled with programs like Weatherbug, or by Windows Messenger Service spam.

Programs like Spybot Search & Destroy will get rid of adware.

To get rid of Windows Messenger Service, here's an easy-to-follow guide.

Please don't remove your question just because you found a solution! And please, share your solution once you've found it! OpenTechSupport likes to exist as a resource where people can search for problems similar to theirs and see how other people solved the problem.

Those of you being generally off-topic in this thread, I deleted your posts. You all know better than that by now. *stern looks*

I will be more careful afterwards ...

I turned off system restore, made sure all the hidden files and file extensions were shown, made sure everything in startup was checked, booted in safe mode, ran Norton AV, spybot S&D, AdAware with deep scan registry on and included additional info in the advanced screen and tweaked it, too, did an online scan with TrendMicro, ran Hijack This! and posted my log on two different fora, did a google search for the programs I didn't recognize in HJT, deleted those that the fora members told me to and deleted those that I found myself, ran a program called LSPfix to fix the problems in my daughter's winsock file and then uninstalled any programs left in the registry and on my hard drive (yes, there were folders left even after the software fixes.) Everything is working great now. I will keep up with the cleaning from now on so that it doesn't get so messy again!

I HAVE TRIUMPHED!!! And I did it all without formatting my hard drive like my favorite geek suggested. Formatting is such a risky business because you can lose so much info.

Sorry about not posting my fixes. That was rude of me. Thank you for all your help.
