I need a good, cheap Guitar

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i dont know much about Guitars to tell the truth and i dont know if "good" and "cheap" can be put together to describe a Guitar, i want to start taking lessons. I need a good, cheap guitar, where can i get one. I know there are a couple of guitar players here on OTS. i just need a good Acoustic, or should i start with Bass?

Thanks anyways.

It's really up to what you want to play. It's probably better to start with a guitar first, then move on to bass if you feel you want to. Bass is a little more about technique once you get past the initial learning period.

When it comes to a "cheap" guitar, a lot of companies put out Korean or Japanese machine made guitars, which are all low on quality, fairly similar, and good for beginners. I find that Dean Guitars puts out the best quality "cheap" guitars. If you can find a store that deals in em, I'd recommend them over most others.

*edit*

if you can't find Dean, you can't go too wrong with Ibanez or Fender.

Go Ibanez and be like Joe!

Posted by: Cheese

haha, the only thing Ibanez about Joe's guitars is the name on the headstock. There's a lot of deception in the guitar market, especially with endorsers. Most rock stars guitars with names on the headstock are "ghostbuilt" by a custom shop.

Acoustic or Electric? And how cheap?

I have an electric I'll sell for $500.00.
Epiphone Les Paul "Joe Perry" model limited edition.

Comes w/ a good hard case too.

I want an Acoustic one. I guess im just being lazy thats all. I should get off my ass and go look for a good ol' music store. That article by Cheese is great though, and really informative.

BTW Thebend, i would choke iwth rage at the price of your guitar but it is obvioulsy a very good one so i can understand.

Posted by: TheBends0

Yeah I'm selling it and my other 2 guitars to get a good acoustic. I really want a Taylor. If you are looking for a cheap acoustic you should look at Alverez.. but for guitars $500.00 is cheap. You're not going to get much for $200 or less.. I know b/c I have a $200 fender :P (actually I think it was like $260).

Posted by: Cheese

$500 is about midrange for acoustics. You can do just fine for 200-250, especially for a beginner.

Try the Fender Stratocoustic - that's the one I have right now

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7.../base_id/80463/

Sounds pretty good, plugged or unplugged. Acoustically it doesn't have as full a sound as regular deadnoughts, but still sounds pretty damn good Bought it for around $250 when it first came out years ago...

you might wanna buy separate strings for it though...

And if you have some extra money left over, also invest on a mini-Marshall for some portable electric action

I Currently use a Jackson soloist, it may be 15 years old, but it screams on my Peavy Trans Tube amp, however, it is rather difficult to play, and it not cheap. When I 1st started out I used a Yamaha EG-303, which is basically a costco guitar for $200. It was a little too cheap for my liking, so I made the mistake of going to a more expensive novelty guitar - The B.C. Rich Warlock Acrylic. Not only was it heavy, and resonated poorly, but it BROKE!

Bottom line, go for an Ibanez RG Series, they're dirt cheap and they have a nice fat neck which is easy to play on. Expect it to hit you for about $500.

Guys thanks so much for all the help. I really was hoping that an Acoustic guitar would be about $150 or less, but all these $500 and above stuff... I can afford to pay $150, thats my ceiling.

The cheapest i have seen is the the Canis posted, and even then that is expensive (for me)

you can buy home-made acoustic guitars at some Mexican music stores for less than $100... unfortunately, you said you wanted a good cheap one

Anyway, check this link:

Then again it might be time to puruse the newpaper ads for yard sales, free classifieds, and pawn shops...not that anyone will willingly let a good guitar go for cheep but you never know.

Posted by: TheBends0

Yeah, you can't get much for $150.00. If you shop around enough you're sure to get something though. If there is a used guitar store near you then you might want to check that out.

edroman guitars... I remember seeing that place the last time I was in vegas.

Whatever the case: the JS10th is still a hunk of sex.

According to Joe... he plays actual Ibanez too. Joe is Üuber cool.

If your looking for a good cheap acoustic guitar, I just picked up a Yamaha F325 package from Musician's Friend for $129. They normally run anywhere from 150-200. I give it thumbs up all around.

If you're willing to go electric (I know you said you wanted acoustic, but whatever), I'd sell my Washburn Electirc for like $120. I bought it 3 years ago, used, but not much. I've added maybe 10 hours of playing time to it... not much at all. It's in awesome condition (except for a knick on the back metal plate), and comes with an electirc tuner, a bag, cords to hook it up to a stereo (I used it as a cheap amp), and picks. Extra strings too. It's teal-ish blue.

If this is something you're actually intrested in, let me know, and I'll hunt down my brother for his digital camera.

Nothing is wrong with the guitar. I just never got into it. I play the piano, and thought it would be cool to play becasue guitarists get so much more respect than keyboardists.

Cheers!

I play the piano also, i just wanted to learn guitar because you cant sling a keyboard over your shoulder and look cool

In any case its really for the love of the music, the guitar has always fascinated me and i have always wanted to play it. I think i will go with Tecils link but thanks anyway, all i want is an Acoustic.

Posted by: BekZoR

Sounds good! I hope you find something you like.

And speaking form experience, stick with it, no matter how much you hate it, and no matter how bad your fingers hurt (okay, well maybe not so much on non-metal strings). If you can get past the first 40 hours or so of playing, you'll be okay! Practice every day, and don't skip. Not practicing leads to you hatred and bitterness of your guitar... which then ends you up trying to sell it to someone on a fourm three years later.

Cheers!
