I am helping a friend with Yahoo DSL that won't connect.Tech support said PPPoE was missing and to contact computer mfg or Microsoft. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

First, it might help to know what PPPoE is if you don't already:

I've never used Yahoo! DSL, but if you need a PPPoE client to connect and you don't have one, there's the problem. I'm surprised that tech support told you to contact the computer manufacturer or Microsoft about the problem, since I'm pretty sure that Yahoo! would supply the client themselves. Did tech support say that you have to get the client yourself?
If your friend has Windows XP, he or she could use the built-in PPPoE client. Look here for how to set it up:

RASPPPOE is a popular third-party client:

If your friend has a broadband router, most likely it can be configured to log in to the Yahoo! service. The DSL modem your friend is using may also have that ability.

Not familiar with DSL and PPPoE but from what she told me tech support indicated a file was missing in her computer(XP Home)and that is why the PPPoE couldn't be set up.I believe the PPPoE option wasn't there.Sorry I can't give more detailed info but we are 250 miles apart and I'm getting all of this second hand on the phone. Thanks very much for the reply, any info will help.I will see her and the computer next week.

Do you know what file tech support said she was missing? If a certain Windows system file is missing and she can't create a PPPoE connection in XP, she should be able to get that file from her XP CD.

Tech support didn't indicate which file may be missing but I will do a factory restore on the computer this week end.Again thanks for the help and any other suggestions will be welcome.
