well.....unfortunately im still on dial up... ....anyone in OTS still using dial up connections....id like to speed it up a little more using a dial up accelerator..any recommendations anyone???

I share your pain...dial-up is teh luzor.
Unfortuntaely, I can't recommend an accelerator, because I honestly don;t know what they do (well, obviously make dial-up faster somehow, but not positive on upload speeds, etc), how they work, and if they work.
NetZero may work, but I have no clue.

Dial up accelerators work by compressing images and such so that they will load faster and by caching frequently visited pages on their server. It will not speed up file downloads at all. BTW, in my experience, while it does speed up browsing, it does not work as fast as the net zero commercial shows it.

so theres by no chance i could speed by even just a little bit my file uploads/downloads etc.... ...well....the least i could do is speed by my web surfing..could anyone recommend any dial up accelerator that works great or at least i could see the difference in the speed when i use it..im currently looking for one....btw if i change my ISP to a mch better one and upgrade my modem (i hav a Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem) will it have a significant effect on my dial up speed??

Hello
Well depending on the Operating System you us
windows 98
you can use a program called tweak all, and on one of the tabs you can set the settings to either windows default are optimize, or specify custom number, this value is MTU, this program will not work on xp.
windows xp and 98
well on here you can use a program called naviscope version 8.67 is out, but someone has messed with there homepage, not very happy with that, anyway since my dam internet explorer as been ******* disabled by spyware and everything want to try to bring up internet explorer while doing a dam search which then says the program as to close, i am using mozilla firefox at moment, at least that has not been comprimised.
Anyway look on pcplus magazine or maxpc at www.maxpc.co.uk and then search for it on there, it tells you more info on that site, but unfortunatley i could not get the exact address .
If not you may be able to get it from a local market, this is a freeware program anyway, freely dritrubute.

hello
Well you could try fresh download.

i use this all the time and i think it is wonderfull, it is free, and there is no spyware, you can put your downlods into folder order.

You can try TCP Optimizer I've had good results with it and it is free. I don't think that upgrading your modem would have a significant affect if the one you have now is a 56K v92 modem. The only dial up accelerator that I have ever tried is Earthlink's. It did noticeably speed up my web browsing and seemed to work well. I only used it briefly though. Changing your ISP may help if you find a better one, though mostly the dial up service depends on how good your telephone system is.
One way to speed up your downloads would be to use something like Download Accelerator . Be aware that the free version comes with ads, though.

upgrading to a v92 modem and isp, and using whichever browser you find the fastest loading will give you the most benefits. the accelerators give you poor image quality in exchange for the speed, and you can always set your browser to cache for longer periods.

ok im planning to buy a 56k v92 modem...what brands do you recommend?? well USR is definitely on my list but pricewise im still thinking and besides our currency here is in pesos (philippines) and i know that the prices here are much more higher than usual
For the dl accelerator i use Leechget 2004 v1.1 and ive had good results.. i use Mozilla Firefox for my browser and im much satisfied with its performance than IE...ill also check out the naviscope web accelerator and the TCP optimizer...quite interesting...

Hello
Well firstly i will say that 56k v92 was not supported by my isp even i rushed out and bought the v92 modem, but i could only use v90 on my isp, in the united kingdom there are some that support it and some that don't, i just want you to be aware of that fact, you may have to ask you isp if they support v92, my isp thought that this was an expensive feature to upgrade and the cost out weighed the benefits.
I like mozilla firefox, internet explorer is ok, but people keep comprimising it, and i am with microsoft on that issue, i call that vandalisam, i think that if someone is given the power to make programs they should not abuse there power, because went they do damage to windows xp by using viruses and spyware, they are just then make other people spend money on prevention and windows repairs.
I heard one person say that these virses are made by the virus companys so that we will go out and by the anti - virus software, could be true, but who knows.

Also, not really my area of expertise, but I have heard that you can link two modems together to increase speed. Someone else will probably know more about this than I do.

use dual 56k modems
Posted by: woogy
what exactly are pros and cons when i use a dual 56k modem??
Posted by: redwench
as the modem is faster than your connection, not a lot of pro, unless you have 2 phone lines.
