No Signal

Hello and thanks for reading this post:

As solving computer problems is sort of like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, I will first show the entire set of pieces I have in the box.

Hardware:
AMD Atholon XP 2800+
ECS N2U400-A MOBO (without the 8/12/04 Bios update)
Kingston 512 (2700) x2
Seagate 80 GB HD
Creative 4.1 sound card
Nvidia Ti4200 AGP card.
400 watt PS

Software:
Norton Antivirus (updated an hour before the crash)
Windows XP Home ed. (AKA $100 wallpaper)

Drivers are as resent as the building of the system (July 21, 04).

No over clocking has been done.

Ok, now here is the problem:
It's broken. I'm joking. I'm joking. No. Really it's broken.
The system froze on me while playing City of Hero's (CoH) and since then has been acting strangely.

After the crash, I restarted the system but was greeted with a "no signal" box on the monitor.
So, I pulled out the video card and tested it on another machine. It works. I then tested the memory and CPU on another system. They also work. I also put in a different video card in my ECS board. nothing. No signal.

Now is the part I don't get:
I pulled out the board, take it back to the store and tell them I can't get the mobo to send a signal. The gal at the return desk plugs in the bare basics (memory and chip) hotwires the mobo and bang, screen comes up.

So I go home feeling like a fool.
I hotwire it up, and it starts up. I add the one stick of memory and it runs, I add two and it does not start up. I switch stick and slots and sometimes it starts up and sometimes it doesn't.

But it gets better:
I test the monitor; retest the video card and CPU on another machine. They work fine. I then test the memory on the ECS board one at time. They show up on the screen separate (512) and together (1GB). Yes, I know this statement may sort of contradict some wording above. I put all the stuff back into the ECS mobo and hotwire it. Out of ten try's, I get five starts and five no-starts.

A start by the way, results in a completely normal boot up. XP kicks in, the HD sings. It's like nothing happened.

A no start (ns) shows only a "no signal" sign on the screen.

I have a no idea what the issue is here. All the fans run regardless of a start or (ns), and while I have my doubts with no-name PS, I really doubt it's the problem.

If it were the HD, why would I get perfect boot ups sometimes and not the other?
I really don't know what the heck the trouble could be.
Any ideas. I will try to reply and fill in any missing information that may have not been listed here. Also, as I sometimes get good starts, is there something on the software side I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

the hard drive going bad wouldnt keep it from booting.

run the hard drive diagnostics program provided by the manufacturer, and a memory tester from www.memtest.org. check each dimm seperately, preferably on another board.

did you try flashing the bios with the most recent version?

I just bought the XP 2800 w/ECS N2U400-A board. I also bought all new 1gig PC2100 266 DDR memory and a Gigabyte GeForce 5700 video card. I get NO signal, my HD LED light stays lit, and the machine keeps BEEPING every 5 seconds until you turn it off. Anyone know what the problem is?

HELP!! Thanks!

importbeats, is that a 1 gig ram chip? I had an issue with a machine I built where the 1 gig ram chip was not compatible with the motherboard( found this out after swearign and emailing at customer support at the place I bought it) Test it with some other ram.

check the post code, that should tell you what the problem is.
