Security Flaws Already Found In SP2
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Security researchers inspecting a new update to Microsoft's Windows XP found two software flaws that could allow virus writers and malicious hackers to sidestep new security features in the operating system.
The flaws could allow virus writers to circumvent the security feature and write worms that spread on XP SP2 systems, according to the bulletin. However, the researcher who discovered the holes says he does not consider the flaws to be serious and he still recommends installing SP2.

Hello
WHAT, SECRUITY HOLES, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Last week i downloaded SP2 and installed it, it took 30 minutes to download it on 1 meg broadband at home, and it was 266 meg in size, thats double the size of service pack 1.
So how do you remove it, or is it permanent like with SP1, also i HATE that system restore facility, i have disabled it, since people say that it writes to your hardisk when your system is idle.
Regards
Andrew

On the topic of updates here, I don't really wanna start another thread and clog up the board.
I'm running Windows 98se on my machine, and haven't updated it at all since I got my computer. I've had it since January, bought it from a warehouse place. I don't have internet access on that machine, but I'm wondering if I should download the the updates from another computer with internet access, and then apply the updates at a later point.
Is it worth it for me to get these updates?

if youre not going online with it, i wouldnt bother unless you experience problems that the updates address. of course, this covers a wide area, as theyve updated directx, media player, and a bunch of stability and compatability issues.

Yeah, I was hoping that I could get some specific updates regarding compatability and stability.
I'll look into it, but for the most part, I'm not experiencing any problems as of now. If I was, I'd post 'em on here.

th security holes were found mid august.. any chance theyve been fixed? I dont like to leave updates undownloaded that could protect against hackers and such
Posted by: Tecil
As far as what I've read the ones that were foundy were fixed in the release version that was put up on Windows Update last week.

Hmmmn, have you been keeping uptodate with updates? I've so far downloaded it with a couple of our company computers and 4 systems (2 laptops & 2 desktops for my friends) and the size was just 75mb - 90.12mb at the most.
Like SP1, sp2 is just a combination of previous fixes plus with the additional "enhancements" for IE(pop up blocker, better control, better active X handling), Security center via ICF(Firewall) etc etc. Which should just put it around at 75mb.
As for the pre-release version having 2 security holes. Well... it was a pre-release wasn't it

i am using SP2, and i found it is good.

you guys are too paranoid, there's no such thing as a perfect software, all existing software contains some form of bug, and it is highly probable that in the process of fixing the bug you might introduce some new bug
