popup madness

I have downloaded and run S&D, adaware, a squared, cc cleaner, and I have a copy of Norton Sysworks and have run a scan in safe mode both with and without networking, and without sys restore on and I still have popups.

On a ralated note, my daughter has trouble opening IE in her settings- it has a not found page at least twice before she can browse sucessfully. We have cable and 4 other PCs with no problems on any of the others.

Any advice?

if you dont have your browser or another program set to block popups, popups you will get

daughter most likely has a corruption in ie or winsock. a scandisk/checkdisk might fix it.

Does S&D innoculate block popups? If not, what software do you recommend? (A family member referred me to this sight and thinks highly of you, redwench)

You can either use another browser (such as Mozilla) or download Google toolbar which will block pop ups in IE.

no, spybot will prevent stuff from being installed on your computer, or block it from running. but standard popups are just from the website. if ie has been updated to block popups as planned, just update it and activate. if not, what he said.

Thank you for the advice. Can you run scandisk/checkdisk on xp?

I have Norton one button checkup that I have run a couple of times, but she still has ie probs.

Also, What can you tell me about hijack this?

Thx again.

HijackThis is a program that pretty much shows you everything that is running.

It's handy for detecting and junk that you have that you may not be aware of.

Do a google search for it, it's a 197k download or something similar. I just posted my log on here myself.

The google toolbar worked, thx.
Disk doctor didn't fix the problems with my daughter's settings, and I can't run scandisk or checkdisk on xp. I'll try some other Norton fixes and see if I can get her up and browsing again. Thanks for all you help.

Hello

Ad-aware 6 is another spyware removal program you can download and use the free program, but if you want the resident version that runs in memory all the time you will then have to pay for the pro version, but the personal version is completely free to use.

Also if you scan you computer with Ad-aware 6 with google toolbar installed then Ad-aware 6 reports the toolbar as spyware medium risk.

The problem your having with internet explorer, i would suggest running windows xp install and doing an attempt to repair, that may solve the problem since someone said it is winsock that is damaged. Doing this repair re-copies all the system files back to your computer keeping your settings, like desktop themes and colours, also after you have done this repair you will need to download all the service packs again and install windows media player if you had 9 installed previously, also if you had direct x 9 installed previously you will have to install that, it will be well worth it, i did it recently, since i got a trojan horse which caused internet explorer to crash, then after i removed the virus, internet explorer kept on saying this program has to close, there was 4 system files missing thats why it errored but attempting to repair solved that problem

Regards

Andrew

if you cant run checkdisk on an xp system, its seriously damaged. youll have to run a repair installation.

Thanks, Andrew. I had a trojan as well, but didn't realize that it had affected my system. It seems to be a problem in her settings only, but she is the one using this pc regularly.

Redwench, a computer geek told me that you can't run check disk or scandisk on xp, and I believed him. I just ran it and it verified everything, but nothing more. Should it do more?

I am a dos 5&6 veteran, have done some with windows 98, but I haven't worked in computers for about 3 years, so I am a bit intimidated. I appreciate everyone's advice and I really appreciate the non-threatening and non-condescending attitude I find here.

xp does not have the scandisk function. the checkdisk function replaces it. and yes, it will correct errors if you set it to do so. it might not be finding any if you ran diskdoctor or some other type of repair.
