Dear All
I am incountering a problem with my dial up connection, when i first connect a continues flow of information ( send and recieve packet) occure opening any site on my IE. This slows down considerably my internet connection.. i have a Win 2K with ServicePack 4 and did use some known programs like spybot S&D 1.3 and Ad-Aware 6.0, but still the problem remains... Also have an updated norton antivirus and scanned my system too many times but withought any result...
Please if any one knows any program that could detect what is causing these kind of problems i would be grateful...
Thanx

if you want to know whats using your bandwidth, put up a firewall.
Posted by: Budsam
Could you give me a good firewall program that i could download, it would be helpful... and the other question is that if I change my internet browser to opera or something similar, could it solve this problem, if yes is it advisable to install opera or could is there a better browser from your experience
Posted by: redwench
unless you have something nasty working through ie, its not the browser. although the other browsers are better from a security standpoint for now.

It could actually be Nortan Antivirus. That program is known to slow down some computers, as I had to uninstall it, then reinstall windows to fix the problem. I was going at 4k when it was installed when I had Dialup. You might want to get AVG Antivirus instead, just Google it.
Posted by: FadedMaster
AVG is available at www.grisoft.com
Posted by: Budsam
Well I never used the AVG antivirus, I am willing to change to it but my question is it is realable to use.. Is it good to use and is it up to date about the new viruses. Would like to know before I uninstall norton and loose all my virus definition updates... If AVG is reliable I will change to it as norton slows down the system too much...
Thanxs for the information... never thought that an antivirus could slow down a connection...
Thanks

Sygate´s firewalls also works very good, or BitDefender has a built-in too.. or, Tiny Firewall .. or .. Black Ice PC (or Server) Firewall.. anyone of these, works good.
Posted by: redwench
i would avoid black ice, unless theyve improved greatly. the rest are fine.
yes, avg works quite well, they update detections daily when necessary.
Posted by: FadedMaster
Yea, AVG is trustworthy. And it's better than having Norton with disabled auto-protect. BlackICE has improved, last I checked they improved the customizability. Still, there's better firewalls out there as Redwench said. ZoneAlarm is a great free one though.
